Meaning · English
For me there is no bondage and no liberation. The delusion has gone quiet, and it had nothing to stand on. The world seems to rest in me, yet in truth it does not rest in me at all. This world, body and all, is certainly nothing. The self is pure consciousness only. So where is there any room left for imagining?
Janaka is speaking about himself, in the first person. Three words carry the verse. Bandha is bondage, from bandh, to tie. Moksha is release, from muc, to let go. Bhranti is delusion, a wandering of the mind off the truth. Kalpana is imagining, the making up of something that is not there. Janaka says he has no bondage and no release. Release only makes sense for someone who was tied, and he finds nothing that was ever tied. The delusion that made it seem so has gone quiet. It had no support, no ground of its own, so it fell away when looked at. Next he says the world appears to sit in him, yet in truth it does not. He means it has no existence of its own, apart from the awareness in which it shows up. The body and the world are called nothing in that sense only. Janaka does not say they are never seen. What is left is the self, which is cinmatra, consciousness and nothing besides. The last question closes it. If only awareness is there, imagining has nothing to work on. The verse answers the question Janaka asked at the start: how freedom is won. His answer is that there was never a rope to untie. The text asks the listener to look for the thing that is supposed to be bound.
A film shows a house burning and a ship going down. The screen stays dry and unburnt the whole time, and when the film ends nothing needs mending. The screen is the self. The fire and the flood are the bondage and the world, which were only ever shown on it.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one thing you feel trapped by: a debt, a job, a habit. 2. Ask quietly: who is it that feels trapped? Where is that one found? Stay with the question without hurrying to an answer. 3. Notice the thought "I am stuck" as something that arrives and leaves, while the one who notices stays still. 4. Then go on with the evening as usual.
A man lies awake at three in the morning, going over the loan he cannot repay. His chest is tight. In his mind the debt has become a locked room, and he is inside it. Ordinary experience says night makes worries look larger than they are. The verse would work on that moment in steps. First, the sentence "I am trapped" is seen as a sentence, something the mind is saying. Second, the feeling of being shut in is separated from the facts: the amount, the date, the people to call. Third, whoever is watching all this is seen to be untouched by it, awake and quiet, like the one who watches a story being told. In the text's teaching, that watcher is the self, and the sense of being tied was imagined on top of it. By morning the man can make the phone call from a steadier place. The verse does not clear the debt, ease the grief of failure, or replace advice from a lender, a lawyer, or a doctor if sleeplessness or low mood has settled in.
