Three Gods at Her Feet

Meaning · English

Worship of the three gods, born of the three strands, is worship of your two feet, auspicious one. For they stand always beside the jewelled stool that bears your feet, their crowns bound with hands folded like buds.

Three words carry the verse. Triguna-janita means born of the three gunas. The text calls the three gods products of nature's three strands, so they come after her. Mukulita means budded, from mukula, a bud: palms pressed together like a flower not yet open. Manipitha is a jewelled seat, here the stool her feet rest on. The poet makes a claim and then gives a reason. The claim: whoever worships the three gods has already worshipped her feet. The reason comes with 'for indeed': the three stand beside her footstool, always, with folded hands raised to their crowns. Their worship goes to the same place. What is offered to them is offered where they themselves are bowing. The verse answers a question left open by the verses before it, where these gods make, keep and dissolve the world at the lifting of her eyebrow. If so, where do they stand in relation to her? Here the poet says they stand at her feet as servants stand at a throne. The commentators read the folded hands as the sign that the highest gods hold no higher seat than her footstool. Nothing here dismisses the three. They are shown at their work of reverence, and her feet are shown as the place where all worship meets. The poet asks nothing of the listener. He draws a picture and lets the listener see who is standing where.

Picture a temple's inner step, where three elders stand with palms joined and heads bowed, day after day. A visitor who comes and bows at that step bows in their company. The step is her feet, the elders are the three gods, and the visitor's bow joins theirs.
