Meaning · English

Brahma goes to his end. Vishnu comes to rest. Yama, the destroyer, is destroyed, and Kubera, giver of wealth, dies. Even Indra's whole company closes its eyes. In this great dissolution, your lord alone plays on, with you beside him.

Three words carry the verse. Pancatva means the state of five: death, the body returning to the five elements. Vinasha is ruin, a thing coming apart. Viharati is play, from vi-hri, to move about freely, with no need behind it. The poet lists the gods one by one. Brahma, maker of the worlds, dies. Vishnu, their keeper, stops. Yama, who ends every life, is himself ended. Kubera, lord of wealth, is gone with his treasure. Indra's host of gods, the whole line of them, shut their eyes. The poet means that every office in the universe, creator and preserver and destroyer and giver, is held for a time and then laid down. This is the great dissolution, the mahasamhara. Then comes the turn. Shiva is not named at first. He is called her lord, and he plays on. He is not rescued by her, and he is not troubled by the ending. The poet is speaking to the Goddess, and the praise is that he is never alone in that stillness. She is the one he plays with. Lakshmidhara's commentary reads this as the Goddess standing above even the three great gods. The verse follows the earlier verses on her power over them. It asks nothing of the listener but to see where the lasting thing lies.

At the end of a long wedding, the caterers, musicians and guests leave one by one, and the lamps are put out hall by hall. In one courtyard a married couple still sits, laughing together, in no hurry. The departing helpers are the gods, and the couple is Shiva with the Goddess.
