Even after drinking nectar, which takes away fear, old age and death, all the gods, Brahma, Indra and the rest, still perish. Yet Shambhu swallowed the terrible poison and time's reckoning did not touch him. Mother, the root of that is the greatness of your earrings.

Three words carry the verse. Sudha is nectar, the drink the gods take to keep death away. Kala-kalana is time's reckoning, the way time counts a being and takes it. Tatanka is the ear ornament, the earring a married woman wears. Shambhu, a name of Shiva, means the giver of welfare. The poet begins with a puzzle. The gods drink nectar, and the text says it removes fear, old age and death. Still, Brahma, Indra and the others pass away in time. Their protection runs out. Then comes Shiva, who swallowed a poison so fierce that it was dreadful even to name, and time's counting never reached him. The poet asks why one was safe and the others were not. His answer is that the cause lies in her earrings. The greatness of that small ornament is the root of Shiva's safety. This follows from what the hymn has been teaching: Shiva acts only joined with Shakti. Here her power is shown guarding him, and it is named through something as small as an earring. The commentators read the earrings as the sign of a wife whose husband is kept safe. Nectar is a thing the gods take, while her protection is what Shiva rests on. The poet is speaking to her directly, as Mother, and he is giving thanks, not stating a rule.

A man walks through a hard downpour and arrives dry because someone beside him holds a wide umbrella. Onlookers credit his coat or his luck. The dry man is Shiva, and the umbrella is the Goddess's quiet power, which her earrings stand for.
