Mind Brahma's crown before you. You stumble on the hard crown of Vishnu, Kaitabha's foe. Strike aside Indra's diadem. While these gods bow low and Shiva comes hurrying to your house, your attendants' warning rings out as you rise to greet him.
The poet pictures the Goddess's doorway at the moment Shiva arrives. Gods are bowing so low that their crowns lie across the floor. Her attendants call out to her: Brahma's crown is in front, Vishnu's hard crown will catch your foot, push Indra's crown aside. Brahma, Vishnu and Indra are named by their titles. Vishnu is the one who slew Kaitabha, and Indra is the enemy of Jambha. The poem gives each a single epithet and moves on. Three words carry the picture. Kirita and kotira both mean a crown, the mark of rank. Parijana means the household around her, from pari, around, and jana, person. Abhyutthana is the courtesy of rising to meet an honoured guest, from ut, up, and sthā, to stand. Bhava is Shiva, from bhū, to become. The text teaches her greatness through what the attendants have to say. She rises, and the crowns of the gods are in her way. The three who rule making, keeping and heaven are only bowing heads at her threshold. Shiva, who comes in haste, is the one she stands up for. The teaching here is that even the highest rank in the universe lies at her feet, and that her bond with Shiva is one of mutual welcome. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see this doorway and what it says about whom the gods bow to.
A crowded doorway at a wedding. Relatives bend to touch an elder's feet, and a helper calls out to mind the stacked brass lamps on the floor as she rises to greet the groom. The lamps stand for the crowns, the elder for the Goddess, and the helper for her attendants.
