Whoever always contemplates "I am you," attended on every side by the unfailing powers, animā and the rest, born of his own body, why wonder that he treats three-eyed Shiva's wealth as straw, while the fire that ends the age waves lamps before him?
Three words carry it. Bhāvayati comes from bhū, to become, and means to bring into being in the mind, to hold a thought until it is lived. Aham iti is "I am," and tvām is "you." Together they make one practice: holding the thought "I am you," with the Goddess as the "you." Animā is the first of the powers, from aṇu, atom, the power of becoming tiny. Nīrājana is the waving of lit lamps before someone being honoured. Here is what the hymn says, clause by clause. The one who always meditates on himself as the Goddess is served on all sides by animā and the other powers. They are born of his own body, so they are not borrowed from elsewhere. They are called nitya, constant. Because of this, the poet says, it is no wonder that he counts Shiva's wealth, the lordship of the three-eyed one, as straw. And the fire of the great dissolution, which burns the worlds at an age's end, performs the lamp-waving for him. The question behind it is what a devotee gains by knowing her as himself. The poet's answer is a measure of size. Shiva's wealth is the largest thing the hymn has named so far, and next to this identity it is straw. The powers are shown as attendants, not as the aim. The commentators read the "I am you" as the worshipper's oneness with her, not as a boast.
At a wedding, the elders stand at the gate and wave a lit lamp before the groom. A flame that could burn the house down is made into a small welcome. The dissolution fire in the verse is that flame, and the devotee is the one being welcomed.
