Same Object, Different Minds

Yoga Sutras 4.15

Meaning · English

The object is the same, yet minds take it differently. So the object's way of being and the mind's way of knowing are two separate paths.

Four words carry it. Vastu is the object, the thing that stands there as a fact. Citta is the mind-field, the instrument that receives and colours what it meets. Bheda means a split or difference. Vibhakta means divided, set apart, and panthah is a path or course. Patanjali's point is that when one object meets many minds, the impressions differ. The object stays the same while the minds vary. So the object cannot be made of mind, and the mind cannot be made of the object. Each follows its own course, and the two meet only in the act of knowing. The problem it answers comes from the sutras before it. Patanjali has said that an object is a pattern of the guna strands, and that it holds together as one because its changes run in a single phase. A reader might then ask whether the object is only a notion in the knower. This sutra says no. Differing impressions prove that the object stands apart from the mind that takes it up. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, argues from this difference. One and the same object brings pleasure to one mind, pain to another, and indifference to a third. If the object were only an idea in the mind, it could not be shared like that. The commentators generally follow him in reading it as an answer to those who reduce objects to ideas.

Rain falls on a whole town on the same afternoon. The farmer is glad of it, the woman with washing on the line is dismayed, and the child is delighted by the puddles. The rain is one fact. The three reactions come from three minds. The rain's course and the minds' courses run apart.

1. Today, pick one ordinary thing several people will meet: the weather, a meeting, a meal, a noisy street. 2. Later, ask two people how it struck them. If nobody is near, recall how you felt about it at two different hours. 3. Notice what stayed fixed in the thing itself, and what came only from the mind taking it in. Write each in one line. 4. For a minute, hold both lines side by side without deciding which is the truer one.
