The Wonderful Carcass

Yoga Vasishtha 6.2.133

The story · English

Vipaschit began another tale. He had seen a second wonder, in a distant world, and it was a horrible one, the kind of sight that follows sin. He said he had come to see it only because he clung so blindly to ignorance. Somewhere in the vast emptiness, he told them, there is a bright sphere that no one can easily reach. He was wandering there, looking in every direction for the thing his heart was set on, when he noticed a huge, still shadow spreading over the ground, like a swarm of locusts. He looked up. A mountain in the shape of a man was falling fast from the sky, spinning down like a whirlpool.

Who could it be, he wondered. Was it the lord Virat with his mountainous body, or a mountain dropping out of the clouds? Whatever it was, it filled the sky and hid the daylight beneath its shadow. While he was still puzzling over it, he saw the body of the sun come tumbling down as well, as though a storm of the world's ending had flung it. It struck the great belt of the cosmic egg with a hideous crash. Then the huge body landed, and it covered the whole earth, all seven continents and all the oceans. Vipaschit was afraid. He decided to throw himself into the ever-burning fire beside him, rather than wait for the blow.

But the lord of fire, whom Vipaschit had worshipped through a hundred births, appeared before him in a cool, moon-like form. "Fear not," he said. "No evil will come to you." Vipaschit answered, "Be victorious, my lord. Save me from this sudden end that is about to fall on everyone." The god said it again. "Do not be afraid. Rise, sinless one, and follow me to my region of the sky." He sat Vipaschit on the back of his parrot and flew up, burning a path through part of the falling body. From high above, Vipaschit saw it looked like wood, a portent like a comet. Below, the earth shook under it. Mountains split, waters trembled, and every creature cried out as if the last day had come.

The fall was like a mountain peak breaking off and crushing the hills beneath it. It stirred the deep waters, flattened cities and crushed living things, leaving the agents of destruction free to play. The celestials watched from above as the earth seemed to vanish into air. Vipaschit saw that all seven continents could not hold this one body. He asked the god of fire what it meant, why the sun had fallen with it, and why the whole earth had no room for it. The god told him to be patient until the event had passed, and then he would explain. Soon a crowd of heavenly beings gathered around them, siddhas, Apsaras, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, sages, yakshas and gods. They bowed low and praised the dark goddess of Night.

She was refuge to all, they sang. Brahma's grey braids hung from her banner, the heads of slain Daityas were strung across her chest, and at the end of time she devours the world and drinks the sea. Vipaschit kept looking at the carcass. He saw its belly had swallowed the whole earth. The god of fire told him its arms, thighs and head had no limit, and that it had fallen from beyond the polar region, where no human can go. The goddess, he said, is emptiness itself. She stood in the sky like an evening cloud, her arms long as pine trees, her eyes flashing, her teeth shining like moonlight. Ghosts and furies followed her as stars and meteors, and her necklace of skulls clattered like falling stones.

The gods begged her, "Mother goddess, we offer you this carcass. Take it with your followers, and finish it." She breathed in, and the blood and marrow of the body flowed into her wide mouth, like evening clouds pouring into the western mountain. Her thin, skeleton-like frame grew full and heavy, and she stood in the form of Chandika, red as a storm cloud with lightning in her eyes. Drunk on blood, she loosened her clothes and began to dance in the air, swinging her weapons, while the gods watched from the far mountains. Then her ghosts and goblins swarmed over the carcass like rain clouds settling on hills. The Kumbhandas tore it apart, the Rupikas bored into its belly, and the yakshas gored its back with tusks.

They could not reach its arms, shoulders and thighs. Those stretched far beyond the limits of this world, where the ghosts cannot go, and there they simply rotted away. The air filled with the stench and with the crack of bones and the wet chop of flesh. The goddess ate her mouthfuls roasted in the fire from her own mouth, and scraps fell on the earth below. Blood reddened the sky, and the continents became one ocean of blood. No city or home could be seen. The dancing demons waved their arms as if weaving nets for birds, and stretched the entrails from earth to the sun as if measuring the sky with cords. Rama asked how the stench never reached the gods on the polar mountain. Vasishtha explained that the belly lay inside the seven continents, but the breast, sides and waist lay outside, and from there the gods could see the mountain's white peaks.

Seeing the blood and smelling the rot, the gods grieved aloud. "Where has the earth gone, with its waters and people? Where are the sandal and kadamba forests, the gardens of the Malaya mountains, the snowy slopes of the Himalaya? Where is the milky ocean that gave us the moon and Laxmi, the ocean of curds, the sea of honey?" They called out for each island in turn. "Krauncha, with your Kalpa trees. Puskara, with your lotus pools and Brahma's silver swans. Gomedha, with your sweet springs. Saka, with your ever-green groves." They missed the sugar-cane fields, the dance of the Apsaras on Mount Meru, and the Jambuvati river running with the juice of jambu fruit. They said that if this hurt them, it must hurt mankind far more.

Vasishtha went on. When the demons had eaten part of the corpse, Indra and the gods spoke together. The goblins had not finished it. They flung its fat and flesh into the air, where the winds scattered it into clouds, and they threw the leftovers over the continents and seas, so the earth came back into view as mud and water. The gods saw the earth, once so lovely, now soiled with carrion and blood. They saw its big bones were the mountains, and the Himalaya was only the great backbone of the skeleton. Then the demons set to work building the earth anew from the body's materials, and flew up to dance again. The gods ordered the liquid parts gathered into one great basin of the sea.

Because the gods took pleasure in it, that sea was named the ocean of wine. The demons still come down to drink from that bloody pool, and then go back up to dance in the air. The earth, smeared with the fat and flesh of the corpse, was given the name medini, from the word for fat. It is said to have been formed from the body of the demon Madhu, killed by Hari at the beginning of creation. When the last of the body had vanished, day and night returned in their turn. The lord of creatures made all things again and gave the earth back its former shape. So ended the war between the gods and the titans of long ago.
