The story · English

Bhasa was sitting under the wing of the fire god's riding parrot when he asked his question. He wanted to understand the mystery of the carcass, and what had happened around it with the goddess and her demons. The god of fire said, "Listen, prince, and I will tell you all of it. The story is known in all three worlds." He began far back. There is an eternal Intellect, formless and beyond everything, like a boundless emptiness. Countless worlds hang in it like tiny specks in endless space. In time this Intellect became aware of what it held, and it imagined particles of fire, the way you imagine a journey in a dream and then feel you are really travelling.

The Intellect looked at those particles, thought about how they spread, and became one with them. It took shape as powers and senses within them. It saw the senses as homes for their faculties, and then it saw a whole world of beings appear before it, the way you see a city while dreaming. "Among those beings," said the god of fire, "there was one called Asura." He was proud and vain, with no parents or ancestors to his name. One day, giddy with his own importance, he stormed into a sage's holy hermitage and wrecked it in his rage. The sage cursed him. "You have flattened my home with your huge body. Now die on the spot and be born as a wretched gnat."

The fire of the sage's anger burned Asura to ashes right where he stood, the way wildfire eats a forest. His form was gone. What was left of him went limp and senseless, like a mind in a faint, and his feelings drifted off into the air, tossed this way and that by the winds. They stayed together as an airy soul, a bundle of the elements waiting for a body. Then a spark of awareness woke inside it, the way a seed wakes in earth, water and air. Asura's mind was full of the curse and the thought of being a gnat. It dwelt on the shape of that body until it became the gnat. A gnat is a small thing, born in dirt, blown off by a breath of wind, here for a single day.

Rama stopped Vasishtha there. "If all living creatures are only dream-beings, how can they be born from dirt and the like? Are they really born, or is it something else?" Vasishtha answered, "Every being, from great Brahma down to the smallest creature, has two kinds of birth. In one, they are all Brahma. In the other, they come from our own mistakes. The false but deeply rooted memory of an earlier world makes us believe in being born again and again. The other view sees Brahma in everything, and in that view nothing is truly born or made. The gnat was born from the mistaken view. It never saw the one Brahma in all things, so it went on to different pursuits, as you will hear."

The gnat spent its first half-day whistling in a thin little voice among the other gnats in the reeds and tall grass. It drank their dew and juices and flew about happily. The next day it hovered over a pool of mud with its mate. Tired from all that swinging about, it settled on a blade of grass, and a deer's foot came down on it. It died at once, as if a rock had fallen on it. It had died looking at the deer's face, so it was reborn as a deer, with a deer's senses. The deer grazed in the forest until an archer's arrow killed it. In its last moment it saw the hunter's face, and so it was reborn in the next life with that same face and form, as a hunter.

In time the hunter wandered into a hermit's hermitage. The hermit turned him away from his cruel ways and woke him to the truth. The hermit said, "Why have you roamed so long, my friend, tormenting innocent deer with your arrows? Why not protect them instead, and live by kindness to all in this fleeting world? Life is only a breath of air, shadowed by clouds of misfortune, as frail as a falling drop of water. Our pleasures are like clouds with flickering lightning between them. Youth runs away, and its joys slip by like flowing water. The body lasts a moment. So, my child, find your happiness while you are here, and look for nirvana, the great quiet, at the end."
