This becoming is only imagining; in the highest sense it is nothing at all. For those who see that being and not-being are both imagined, there is no not-being in their own nature. The seat of the self is not far off, and it is not reached by drawing back from life. It is already held: free of doubt, free of strain, free of change, free of stain.
Four words carry this. Bhava is being or becoming, from bhu, to be. It names the whole business of existing as someone, with a past, a plan and a name. Bhavana is imagining, making a thing be in the mind, from the same root. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that bhava is only bhavana. The world of becoming is held up by imagining, and in the highest sense it has no standing of its own. That is not a claim that nothing is there. It says nothing there exists apart from the self. Next he turns to the opposite fear. Those who see that being and not-being are both imagined find no real not-being in their own nature, so the dread of ceasing is imagined too. Pada means seat or footing, from pad, to step. The self's pada is where one already stands. It is not far, so no journey is needed. It is not reached by contraction, so shrinking life or pulling away is not the road. It is already gained. Then come four negatives: no vikalpa, the mind's splitting into this-or-that; no effort; no change; no stain. Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer removes the picture of distance behind the question. The text asks the listener to stop treating the self as a destination.
A woman turns the house upside down for her spectacles, checking drawers, pockets and the kitchen shelf, while they sit pushed up on her forehead. The search itself is what keeps her from finding them. The spectacles are the self, never lost, and the hunting is the imagining that it is far away.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep with nothing to fix and nowhere to get to. 2. When a plan, worry or picture of yourself comes up, say quietly to yourself, "imagined," and let it pass. 3. Notice what stays: the one who is aware of the thought coming and going. 4. Tomorrow, once, when you catch yourself saying "when I have this, then I will be at peace," stop and notice that you are already here, saying it.
A woman lies awake at three in the morning, rehearsing tomorrow's argument with her sister-in-law. She has said her lines four times. Her heart is quick, her jaw is tight, and her body is reacting as if the quarrel were happening now. Ordinary experience confirms that the body answers an imagined scene almost as it answers a real one. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that the scene is made, line by line, by her own mind. Second, she sees that something in her is watching the rehearsal, and that watcher is not angry or afraid. Third, as the text teaches, that watcher is the self, near and unchanged, needing no effort to reach. The rehearsal loosens. The verse does not promise that tomorrow's conversation will go well, or that the real quarrel disappears. It does not cure sleeplessness either. If nights like this come often, a doctor is the right person to ask.
