When delusion ends, and nothing more is done than taking back one's own nature, the wise shine, free of sorrow, with sight that has nothing covering it. All of this is only imagining. The self is free and lasting. Knowing this, what would the steady one still practise, as a child practises its lessons?
Three words carry the verse. Vyamoha is delusion, from muh, to be bewildered. Svarupa is one's own form, one's own nature. Kalpana is imagining, something the mind puts together. Abhyasa, the practice named in the last line, means repeated effort toward a goal. Ashtavakra says that when bewilderment ends, nothing new is gained. The only act is taking back what was always one's own nature. The people who have done this shine without sorrow, and their sight has no covering over it. Their sorrow came from the covering, and the covering was never part of them. Then he gives the reason. Everything that seemed to need getting, fixing or escaping is only imagining. The self is free and does not begin or end. If that is known, the closing question is meant to be answered by the reader: practice is for reaching a place not yet reached, and the self was never away from itself. A child practises because it cannot yet do the thing. The steady one has no such gap to close. This answers Janaka's long search for the way to freedom. The text does not say to stop all action. It says the striving that tries to become free is finished, because the freedom was already there. What it asks of the listener is to see this, and to see that no further effort is owed.
A man turns the whole house upside down for his glasses. He checks pockets, drawers and the car. Then his hand rises to his forehead and they are there. The search ends without anything being found. The glasses never left, and only his looking made them seem lost, just as the self was never lost.
1. Once today, when you catch yourself working toward a calmer or better self, stop for one minute and sit with your hands open. 2. Ask: what is missing right now, in this minute? Notice whether the answer is a fact or only a story. 3. Pick one task you are doing in order to become someone, and do it for its own sake, or leave it for the day. 4. Tonight, notice what you did not need.
A man on a morning train is rehearsing what he will say to his sister, with whom he has not spoken since their father's funeral. He has run the argument a dozen times. His jaw is tight and his stomach is knotted, though she has said nothing yet. The verse, as the Ashtavakra Gita teaches it, would change this in steps. First he sees that the quarrel on this train is made of imagining. Her voice and her face are not here. Second, the effort of rehearsing has no one to be used on, so it can be put down. Third, what remains is the window, the seat and his own breathing. Ordinary experience confirms that rehearsed arguments wear us out before anything is said. The text teaches that the self is free of all this and was never touched by it. The limit is plain. Putting the rehearsal down does not settle the real conversation, mend the old quarrel or remove his grief for his father. It only ends the part of the suffering that was being made up on the way.
