Meaning · English
Having settled that the self is Brahman, and that being and non-being are only imagined, what does the one without desire know, or say, or do? The thoughts 'this is he, this am I, this I am not' have withered away. Having settled that everything is the self, the yogi has become silent.
Three words carry the verse. Atma is the self, the witness in everyone. Brahman is the vast, from a root meaning to grow without limit. Kalpita means imagined, literally arranged or put together, the way a mind assembles a picture. Niskama means without kama, without craving. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that once the self is settled as Brahman, the pair 'being' and 'non-being', what is and what is not, is seen as something the mind arranged. Then he asks a question that answers itself: what is left for the desireless one to know, say or do? Knowing, speaking and doing all need someone who wants something. Where wanting has gone, they do not run on. The sorting thoughts, 'this is him, this is me, this is not me', have withered, like a vine with its root cut. When everything is settled as the self, there is no second thing to talk about, and the yogi falls silent. Janaka has asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's reason is that freedom is not won by effort. It is recognised, and the labels that seemed to divide the world were never more than imagined. The teaching asks for settled conviction, not a new practice.
A child draws lines in wet sand at the beach: this side mine, that side yours, a wall between two castles. The tide comes in and the lines vanish. The sand was always one stretch. The lines are the sorting thoughts of he, I and not-I, and the sand is the single self beneath them.
1. Today, listen for the words 'mine', 'theirs', 'him' and 'me' in your own head and speech. Just notice them, for ten minutes, during any ordinary task. 2. Once today, before answering someone, wait for one full breath and see whether the answer was needed. 3. Tonight, sit for five quiet minutes with nothing to know, say or fix. Notice what the mind reaches for first.
A woman sits at a table with her two brothers, dividing their late father's shop. Each sentence begins with 'my share' or 'your side'. Her chest is tight and her replies are ready before the others finish speaking. The verse, as the text teaches it, begins by loosening the sorting. 'This is he, this am I' is a habit of the mind, a line drawn quickly. She might notice the line being drawn. She might notice that the urge to answer comes from wanting something and not from the facts on the table. Saying less, she hears what her brothers are actually asking. Ordinary experience agrees that a tense body and a ready rebuttal make listening harder, and that a pause often softens a room. The verse does not promise she will lose nothing, that the shop will be divided fairly, or that grief for her father will lift. Where money, health or legal matters are at stake, she still needs advice from people who know those things.
