Meaning · English
No scattering of mind, no gathered focus, no great insight, no dullness. No pleasure and no pain for the yogi who has grown quiet. In a kingdom of his own or in a life of begging, in gain or in loss, among people or in the forest, the yogi whose nature holds no alternatives sees no difference.
Three words carry the verse. Upashanta means stilled, from a root meaning to grow quiet, like a fire with nothing left to burn. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, and a vikalpa is a mental alternative, the habit of splitting things into this or that. Svarajya means one's own rule, and here it names a kingdom. The first line takes away the pairs a seeker works with: scattered mind and gathered mind, dullness and sharp insight, pleasure and pain. Even steady focus is dropped, because it only makes sense against distraction. The second line carries the same dropping into outward life: crown or alms bowl, gain or loss, crowd or forest. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that for the stilled yogi these pairs no longer rank. Janaka is a king, so the example is pointed. It is taught here because the earlier verses have said that all is the self and that the ideas of this and not-this have worn away. This verse shows how that looks in a life. Nothing has to be won or avoided to stay at rest. The text asks the listener to see how much of daily effort is spent choosing the better side of a pair.
A child at a seaside draws a line in the sand, calls one side hers and the other the sea's, and guards it all afternoon. Then a wave smooths the whole beach flat. The line was only ever drawn, and the pairs of gain and loss are lines of that kind.
1. Tonight, write down three things from today you called good and three you called bad. 2. Beside each, write what actually happened in plain words, with no label. 3. Read the list slowly and notice which labels you added. 4. Tomorrow, when something goes well or badly, pause for one breath before naming it.
A man stands outside the shuttered shop his family ran for thirty years, the key still in his hand. He has been calling this the end, and every thought about it arrives already ranked: before it was good, now it is bad. The verse would slow that ranking down. First, the plain facts: the shop is closed, the rent is stopped, there is a next week. Second, the labels that came on top of the facts, such as failure and shame. Third, what remains when those are set aside. Ashtavakra's teaching goes further than this, holding that the stilled yogi sees kingdom and begging as one, and that is what the text offers as the deeper rest. Ordinary experience confirms the small part of it: a loss hurts less when the mind is not also arguing about what it means. The limit is plain. The verse does not remove grief or the need to earn a living, and it does not replace advice from a doctor, a lawyer or a friend where one is needed.
