Where is duty, where desire, where wealth, where discernment? "This is done, this is not" — such pairs do not touch the yogi who is free. Nothing at all is left for him to do. No longing colours the heart. For the one liberated while still living, life simply goes on as life.
Four old aims of a human life are named. Dharma is duty, from a root meaning to hold up. Kama is desire. Artha is wealth or purpose. Vivekita is discernment, the habit of sorting what lasts from what passes. Ashtavakra asks where each one stands for the freed person, and the question answers itself: none has a place to stand. Even discernment goes, because it was a tool for reaching the shore, and the shore is reached. "This is done, this is not done" is the talk of dvandva, the pairs: done and undone, right and wrong, gain and loss. The free yogi is not caught between them. The text then says plainly that nothing remains to be done, and that the heart holds no ranjana, no colouring, the way cloth holds dye. Wanting leaves no stain. Last comes the jivanmukta, one free while alive. For such a person life is just life: eating, walking and speaking go on without a story of achievement behind them. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's answer is that the self was never bound, so no list of tasks can be the price of freedom. The teaching invites the listener to see that the effort to finish the list is itself the knot.
A child comes home on the last day of school, bag on the shoulder, and there is no homework tonight. The afternoon is only an afternoon: playing, eating, looking at the street. The free person's life is like that, with the assignment gone and the day still fully lived.
1. Tonight, pick one ordinary chore, such as washing cups or folding clothes, and do it for ten minutes with no goal beyond the chore itself. 2. While you do it, notice each time the thought "done" or "not yet" arises, and let it pass without answering it. 3. Afterwards, sit for a minute and notice whether the body feels any different from after a chore done to tick it off.
A woman stands in her kitchen the evening after her daughter's wedding. The guests have gone. She is already making a list: return the borrowed chairs, settle the caterer, write the thank-you calls. Her hands are busy and her chest is tight, and nobody is asking for any of it tonight. The verse touches this moment in steps. First she may notice the list is a running count of done and not done, and that the count itself is what keeps her braced. Then the cups are simply dirty, so she washes them, and the washing needs no verdict. The chairs can wait for the morning, when she will do them as plain acts. Ordinary experience confirms that a body held ready for the next task stays tense even when nothing is urgent. The limit is plain. The verse describes the freed one's life as the text sees it. It does not promise that the emptiness of the house, or the ache of a daughter leaving, will lift. Real duties, such as the caterer's bill, still have to be met, and low mood that lingers is a matter for a doctor.
