Meaning · English
Where is delusion, where the world, where that meditation, where freedom, for the great-souled one who has come to rest at the very edge of all willing and imagining?
Four things are asked about, and then the answer is left unsaid. Mohah is delusion, from muh, to be stupefied. Dhyana is meditation, the steady holding of the mind. Muktata is freedom, from muc, to let go. Sankalpa, the key word, is the mind's willing and imagining, from a root meaning to fashion together. It is the habit of building pictures, plans and wants. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the great-souled one has come to rest at the boundary of all that fashioning. At that boundary he asks where the four things are. Delusion needs a mind that mistakes. The world, as a picture the mind keeps assembling, needs the assembling. Meditation needs something to reach. Freedom needs something to be freed from. Take away the fashioning and none of them has ground to stand on. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. The answer is that striving, and even the prize, belong to the same imagining that is now at rest. The text does not say a world is absent. It says that for this one it is no longer a thing he builds. What it asks of the listener is to see that the longing for freedom is also a made thing, and can be set down.
A house is finished and the scaffolding comes down. The poles, planks and ropes were needed while building, and nobody calls the bare wall a loss. Delusion, meditation and freedom are the scaffolding. The one at rest has no more building to do.
1. Tonight, for five minutes before sleep, lie still and notice any effort to be calm, to feel better or to get somewhere. 2. When you catch that effort, do not add a second effort to stop it. Just see it as one more thing the mind is making. 3. Notice what is left when you stop grading yourself: the breath, the weight of the body, the sounds in the room. 4. Do this on three nights this week and write one line each time on what you noticed.
A woman lies awake at two in the morning, trying to meditate herself to sleep. She checks every few minutes whether she is calm yet. Each check is itself a small act of making. Ordinary experience shows that trying hard to fall asleep keeps one awake. Ashtavakra's teaching goes further than this. It says the sense of a goal, whether sleep, calm or even freedom, belongs to the mind's fashioning. When the fashioning stops, nothing remains to be achieved. For her, the first step is to notice the grading and let it lapse. She is only a body in a bed, breathing, with the sounds of the house around her. She does not have to win anything. The teaching does not promise that sleep will come, and it does not take away grief or worry. If sleeplessness goes on for weeks, or comes with low mood or pain, a doctor should be seen. The verse speaks of rest in the mind's own making. It does not replace care for the body.
