Let the one who has seen this world say, 'It is not.' But the one without craving, what does he do? Seeing, he does not see. Let the one who has seen the highest Brahman think, 'I am Brahman.' But what does he think who is free of thought, who sees no second? The one who has seen the scattering of the self may practise restraint. But the large-hearted one is not scattered. With nothing left to accomplish, what does he do?

Three words carry it. Vasana is craving, from a root meaning to dwell: the old pull that lingers in the mind. Nirvasana means one in whom it no longer lingers. Vikshepa is scattering, from a root meaning to throw: the mind flung about by wants and fears. Nirodha is restraint, the effort of holding that scattering back. The first clause says that whoever has seen the world rightly may announce that it is not, but the one free of craving does nothing of the kind. He looks at the world and is not caught by it, so he has nothing to deny. The second clause says the knower of Brahman may think 'I am Brahman', yet one who sees no second has no one to address and nothing to affirm. Thinking needs two: a thinker and a thought. The third clause says that someone who has seen his own scattering may restrain it. The generous, wide-minded one is not scattered, and with nothing left to achieve, restraint has no work. The question behind these lines is Janaka's: what must the free person do? Ashtavakra answers that denying, affirming and restraining are all efforts of someone still working toward the goal. The text teaches that the one who has arrived has no such task. It asks the listener to see where effort is only a sign of distance.

A man dreams that his house is flooding. He bails, shouts that the water is not real, repeats that he is calm. Then he wakes. The bed is dry and he does none of it. The three efforts are the dream's work, and waking ends them without any of them being done.

1. Pick one effort you keep repeating, such as pushing a worry away or telling yourself a calming line. Choose a time today, perhaps after supper. 2. Sit for five minutes and stop doing it. Do not fight the thought or answer it. 3. Notice what the effort was adding. Notice whether the thought stays, softens or moves on. 4. Write down one line about what you saw, and leave it there.

A man lies awake at eleven at night, exam results due in the morning. He tells himself it is nothing, that he is calm, that he must not think about it. He checks his phone anyway. Each command is another round of work, and the mind stays busy. Ordinary experience bears this out: the harder we push a thought away, the closer it stays. The text teaches that denying, affirming and restraining are the labour of someone who has not yet seen. Read that way, the first change is small. He can stop arguing with the thought. He can stop repeating the slogan. He can let the restlessness be seen as restlessness, without making a task of ending it. Whatever the text means by the one who needs no effort, the first step toward it is noticing how much of the night is spent on effort. The limit is plain. This does not say the results will be good, or that worry will be gone by morning. It is not a substitute for a doctor when sleeplessness or dread persists for weeks.
