The steady one lives among people as people live, yet sees in himself no absorption, no scattering, no loss of self. Free of being and not-being, content, without craving, the knower has done nothing at all, though to the eyes of the world he seems to act.

Two verses, one picture: a person who looks exactly like everyone else and stands somewhere else entirely. The word for the wise one is dhira, the steady one, whose mind does not shake. Samadhi is absorption, from sam-a-dha, to put together: the mind held still. Vikshepa is its opposite, a throwing apart, the mind scattered. The text says the steady one sees neither in himself. He is not working to stay absorbed, and he does not fear being scattered. Even the loss of self does not appear to him as a danger. Vasana is the leftover pull of old wanting, the way a cloth keeps a scent. He is nirvasana: that pull has gone out of him. So he is tripta, satisfied, and wants nothing added. Being and not-being are the two poles that ordinary striving swings between: to become something, to avoid becoming nothing. He is free of both. The last line is the sharpest. By him, nothing is done. The world sees him eat, speak, work and decide. Ashtavakra says that from where he stands, no doer is claiming those acts, so no gain or loss is recorded. This answers Janaka's old worry about what a free person must look like. The teaching says freedom shows nothing special. It asks the listener to stop measuring wisdom by outward signs, including their own.

A man walks down a street carrying a photograph of a crowd, and in the photograph he is also walking. Another walker passes him and sees nothing unusual. The street is the world's view of him, doing what everyone does; the one holding the picture is the knower, for whom nothing was added or taken away.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and do it as usual. 2. Halfway through, ask once: who is gaining or losing anything here? Notice if the question quiets the task or the wanting around it. 3. Do not try to feel absorbed or to stop your thoughts. If the mind scatters, let it. 4. At night, recall whether anything about the task needed you to be someone in particular.

A man closes his small shop at the end of a slow day. Three customers came, one haggled for an hour and bought nothing, and the till is lighter than last week. He sweeps the floor, as he does every night. The verse touches the sweeping. Most of the weight in that moment is not the sale lost but the count running in his head: a good day or a bad one, what it says about him. Ashtavakra's teaching is that the steady one does the sweeping and keeps no such count. The broom moves, the shutters come down, the key turns, and nothing is entered as gain or loss in a self that must be defended. To onlookers he is the same shopkeeper. Ordinary experience confirms the smaller half of this: work done without a running tally of what it says about us tends to be lighter. The limit is plain. The teaching does not fill the till, pay the rent or remove real worry about money. A tight month stays tight, and a man in real hardship still needs practical help and people around him. What it speaks to is the extra weight of the verdict he adds to the day.
