Meaning · English
For the wise one, acting and not acting are never a stubborn grip. Whatever comes up to be done, he does it and stays at ease. Without craving, without support, self-willed, his bonds loosened, he is tossed by the wind of past impressions and moves like a dry leaf.
Three words carry it. Vasana is a lingering trace of wanting, from vas, to dwell, the way a scent stays in cloth. Nirvasana means none is left. Samskara is an impression laid down by past deeds, from a root meaning to put together. It is a push already given. Svacchanda means own-willed: moving from one's own nature, not from compulsion. For the wise, Ashtavakra says, doing and not doing are both held lightly. There is no obstinate insistence on either. Whatever task arrives, they do it and rest. They have no craving, no prop to lean on, no bond tying them. Old momentum blows them about, and they stir like a dry leaf that holds on to nothing. Ashtavakra says this because Janaka has been asking how the free one lives. Must he act, or must he renounce? The answer is that neither is the point. The question of which is right needs someone gripping a choice, and the wise have let go of the gripper. Action goes on, carried by what is already in motion, with no one adding a claim of mine. The teaching asks the listener to see that peace never depended on choosing correctly between busy and still.
A potter's wheel keeps turning for a while after the hand has left it. Nobody is pushing now. It spins on the earlier push alone, and slows by itself. The wise person's actions are like that: motion left over from past deeds, with no hand gripping it.
1. Pick one small task that arrives unasked today, such as a dish, a message or a favour. 2. Before you start, drop the question of whether it is the right use of your time. Just begin. 3. While doing it, notice the moments you start arguing for or against it. 4. When it is finished, stop. Notice whether you carry it forward in your mind or let it lie.
A grandmother is cooking supper when relatives arrive unannounced, six extra people at the door. Her first reaction is a tight chest and a quick count of what is in the pot. The verse changes the order of what follows. She sees that a task has come, and she does it: more water, more rice, another chair. The inner trial about whether this is fair or whether she should have been warned loses its audience, because no one is holding the case. She stirs, serves, sits down. Ordinary experience confirms that work done without arguing with it takes less out of a person than the same work done in protest. The old text goes further than that, and says the one who acts this way is carried by earlier impressions with no clinging to either doing or refusing. It does not promise that the guests will be easy, that her tiredness will vanish, or that she must say yes to everything. It does not replace rest, medicine or a plain word when a limit has truly been reached.
