Meaning · English
For one who has no worldly round, there is nowhere joy and nowhere sorrow. His mind is always cool, and he shines as though he had no body. Nowhere is there a wish to cast anything off, and nowhere is there loss. He delights in the self. He is steady, and his whole being is cool and clear.
Ashtavakra is still describing the one who knows. Four words carry it. Samsara is the round of becoming, from a root meaning to flow together: the wheel of wanting, getting and losing. Jihasa is the wish to abandon, from the root ha, to leave. It is the push to get rid of a pain, a person, a situation. Videha means without body, vi plus deha. The text says the knower shines as if bodiless, because he no longer takes the body for himself. Atmarama is one who rests in the self, atma plus rama, to take delight. The verse says that for him the round has stopped, so joy and sorrow have nowhere to land. Without the wish to leave, there is no flinching. Without a self that can be destroyed, there is no fear of loss. His mind is cool, like something no longer heated by craving. Ashtavakra says this because Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer is a portrait of what remains when the grasping ends. It asks the listener to see that joy, sorrow, wanting to escape and fearing to lose all depend on taking oneself to be the body and its fortunes.
A deep stone well stays cool through the hottest afternoon. The sun beats on the rim, hot winds blow over it, and the water far below hardly changes. The knower's mind is that water: weather passes over the surface of his life, and the depths are not reached.
1. Today, notice one moment when you want to get away from something: a noise, a task, a mood, a person. 2. Before you act, stay with that wish for ten slow breaths and watch it without obeying it. 3. Later, when something small is lost or spoiled, such as a delayed bus or a spilled cup, see how long the sting lasts when you don't add to it. 4. At night, recall the cool moments, however brief, and note what was absent.
A potter opens her kiln after the long firing. Some pots have cracked, and one was the commission she needed. Her chest tightens, her jaw sets, and she wants to look away, or blame the clay, the weather, the wood. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, the urge to flee is seen as an urge, not an order. Second, the fear of loss is seen as a story about what she is, not a fact in the kiln. Third, her hands go on lifting out the pots, sorting sound from broken, doing the next thing. The text teaches that for the knower this is not effort but his nature, a mind cool because nothing in it is gripping. The verse does not promise the cracked pots are mended, that the money is not needed, or that grief will not come. It does not replace practical help or a doctor where one is needed. Ordinary experience confirms only that a mind not racing to escape sees its situation more clearly.
