Acting Without Claiming

Ashtavakra Gita 18.24

Meaning · English

The wise one's mind is empty by nature. He acts as things happen to come, like any ordinary person. In him there is no pride and no sense of being insulted. He holds the thought: this work was done by the body, not by me, whose form is pure. One who follows that thought, even while acting, does not act.

Three words carry the verse. Shunyachitta means a mind that is empty, from shunya, void. It is not a blank mind. It has no stored plan, no scheme for gain, no private story about who is doing what. Dhira is the steady one, the wise person who is not shaken. Deha is the body, and shuddharupin is the one whose true form is pure, untouched by what is done. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the steady person acts as ordinary people do, doing what the moment brings, because his mind has no agenda. Since he does not take himself to be the doer, praise gives him nothing to puff up and an insult has nothing to wound. The body did the work. He, the pure witness, did not. The last line states the result. A person who is led by this thought acts and yet does not act, because no one inside claims the action. This is taught here because Janaka asked how the free person lives, and the answer is that nothing outward need change. The work goes on. What drops away is the one who says, this is mine and I did it. The teaching asks the listener to see where that claim is made.

A postman carries a letter to a house. Inside is wedding news or a bill, and he walks the same road either way. He delivered it, but he did not write it, and its contents are not his. The body is the postman, the deed is the letter, and praise or blame is the news inside.

1. Today, when someone thanks you or criticises you for something you did, stop for one breath before answering. 2. Say silently, the hands did this, and watch where the pleasure or sting was going to settle. 3. Then answer plainly, as you normally would. 4. In the evening, recall one moment when this happened, and note whether the feeling stayed as long as usual.

A young cook at a wedding feast hears one guest praise the biryani and another grumble that it is cold. Praise lifts her chest, the complaint tightens her jaw, and by the time the plates are cleared she is carrying both. The verse changes this in small steps. The rice was cooked, the hands did it, and she keeps on cooking. The praise reaches the work and the complaint reaches the work. Neither has to be carried home as a verdict on her. She may still fix the cold dish, since acting as the moment asks is what the text describes in the steady person. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired person takes criticism harder, so this is easier on a rested day. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that she feels nothing, that the guest is kind, or that a real fault goes uncorrected. It speaks of the one who has seen through the doer, and for most people that seeing comes slowly.
