Rest After Inquiry

Ashtavakra Gita 18.26

He acts as one who holds no theory, yet he is no fool. Freed while living, happy and radiant, he shines even as he moves through the world. The steady one, not wearied by want of inquiry, has come to rest. He does not imagine, does not know, does not hear, does not see.

Four words carry this. Jivanmukta is one freed while alive: jiva, the living person, and mukta, released. Vichara is inquiry, from vi and char, to move about a question and examine it. Vishranti is rest, from shram, to tire; it is the tiredness gone. Samsara is the flow of worldly life, from sri, to go on moving. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the freed man may look like someone with no opinions to defend, and still he is no simpleton. He is happy and radiant. He walks through the full stream of the world and is not dimmed by it. Then the reason. He is not worn out by lack of inquiry, because he has already inquired to the end. Questioning is finished, and rest is what remains. The last line says he does not imagine, know, hear or see. Taken as the text means it, the mind no longer builds a separate self out of what is seen and heard, and no longer grasps at it. Eyes and ears go on working. Nothing is being claimed from them. This answers Janaka's question about what freedom looks like from outside. It looks ordinary and rested. The verse asks the listener to stop looking for freedom in dramatic withdrawal.

A traveller reaches the end of a long walk and sets his heavy bag down in the middle of a loud bus station. Buses still come and go and people still push past. His shoulders are loose because the carrying is over. The bag is the restless search, and the station is the world.

1. Pick one question you keep turning over, such as a decision or a worry. Today, give it ten honest minutes with pen and paper. 2. Write down what you actually know and what you only imagine. Draw a line under it. 3. Later, when the question returns while you are walking or queuing, notice whether it is new thinking or only the old bag being lifted again. 4. Where it is only the bag, put it down for that moment and watch the street instead.

A retired schoolteacher sits on the stairs of her daughter's house the evening before the wedding. Relatives are arguing about seating, the caterer is on the phone, and someone wants her opinion on flowers. For weeks she has been going over every possible mishap. The verse would change the moment in steps. She would ask what is still undecided and settle it plainly: the seating is done, the caterer is paid. Then the questions that remain are ones thinking cannot answer, so the going-over stops. The noise continues around her, and she answers each person warmly because her mind is not clenched. She looks cheerful, which her family may take for carelessness, though she is not careless. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a mind with an open question keeps rehearsing it, and a settled one quiets. The text goes much further. It speaks of a freedom no event can touch, and that belongs to its own teaching. The verse does not promise that nothing will go wrong at the wedding, or that worry never returns. It does not replace a doctor when sleeplessness or dread will not lift.
