With no absorption and no distraction, he is neither one who longs for freedom nor the opposite. Having seen for certain that what appears is only imagined, the great-minded one simply abides as Brahman. The one in whom ego still lives acts, yet does not act, and does not act, yet acts. For the steady one without ego, nothing is left undone. All is done.

Three words carry this. Samadhi is deep absorption of the mind, and vikshepa is its scattering. The mumukshu is the one who wants release, from the root for the wish to be freed. Ahamkara is ego, literally the 'I-maker'. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the knower has no need of absorption and is not scattered, so he is neither a seeker nor a non-seeker. Seeking only makes sense while freedom seems to be somewhere else. He has seen that the world of separate things is kalpita, built by the mind and laid over what is real, and he stays as Brahman, the one awareness. The second half turns to action. Where the ego-maker remains, a person can be busy and still be inwardly stuck, or sit still and still be driven by a sense of being the doer. Where it is gone, the steady person is not bound by deeds, so nothing remains owed or unfinished. This answers Janaka's long question about how the free person lives. Ashtavakra says there is no list of tasks waiting behind him. The text asks the listener to look at who is doing the work, and who is still seeking.

A lamp stands in a window at dusk. It does not decide to light the room or choose which corners to reach. The light simply fills the room, and no corner is left unlit. In the same way, work is done when no one stands behind it saying 'I am the one doing this'.

1. Tonight, pick one small job, such as washing the dishes or folding clothes, and give it ten unhurried minutes. 2. Each time the thought 'I am doing this' or 'no one notices' arises, just note it. Go back to the hands and the task. 3. When you finish, ask whether anything still feels unfinished beyond the job itself. Notice the answer without arguing with it.

A retired schoolteacher clears her desk on her last afternoon. The room is quiet. She thinks of the children she did not reach and the lessons she did not finish, and wonders whether she did enough. The verse speaks to that tally. Ashtavakra's text says the weight of 'undone' comes from the I-maker, the one who keeps accounts of what is mine. Seen that way, she can ask who is counting. She can notice that the day's work was done by hands, voice and years of care, and that the count is a thought added afterward. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: when we stop defending our self-image, attention goes more fully to the task in front of us. The verse does not promise she will feel no regret, or that her grief at leaving will vanish. Nor does it say that every real problem in her school was solved. It speaks of a different matter, whether a doer stands behind the deed.
