A Mind Without Motive

Ashtavakra Gita 18.30

Not agitated, and not pleased with itself; no doer in it, free of every flicker; without hope, its doubts gone: such is the mind of the freed one, and it shines. It does not set out to contemplate, and it does not set out to act. Yet with no cause behind it, it contemplates, and it acts.

Ashtavakra describes the mind of a freed person by taking things away. It is not agitated, and it is not satisfied either. Satisfaction is a small peak, and a peak needs a valley. The mind has no doer in it (akartṛ): no one stands inside saying 'I am making this happen'. It is free of spanda, the throb or flutter of consciousness as it leaps toward some object. It is nirāśa, without hope, since hope leans toward a future that would finish the job. And the doubts are gone, so there is nothing left to settle. The second verse answers an obvious worry. If the mind is this quiet, does the person sit like a stone? Ashtavakra says the mind does not set out to contemplate or to act. No plan starts the work. Yet it contemplates and acts anyway, nirnimitta, with no cause: no craving, fear or reward pushing from behind. Janaka has been asking what freedom looks like from inside. The answer is that life goes on, and the push behind it has stopped. The listener is asked to see that stillness and activity are not opposites, and that the thing to drop is the motive, not the work.

A lamp stands in a corner of a room. It does not decide to light the table, hope the book gets read, or doubt whether the walls will show. Light simply falls where things are. The freed mind works the same way: action happens in its light, with no one straining to produce it.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or sweeping, and do it for ten minutes. 2. While you do it, notice each time a hope creeps in (that it will be praised, finished soon) or a worry (that it will be done wrong). 3. Do not fight these. Just name them quietly, 'hope' or 'worry', and go back to your hands. 4. At the end, notice whether the task got done without them.

A mother stands in the wedding hall on the morning of her daughter's marriage. The caterer is late, an uncle is sulking, and her mind races between 'what if it all goes wrong' and 'let it just be perfect'. She is moving, but each step is pushed by dread and pulled by hope. The verse points to another way of doing the same morning. She still phones the caterer, still soothes the uncle. But hope and doubt are not behind each action. She sees what is in front of her, does the next thing, and lets it go. Ordinary experience agrees that hands work more cleanly when they are not gripped by fear of the outcome. The text teaches this as the condition of the freed mind, a condition it says is seen directly, not reached by effort. It does not promise that the caterer arrives, that the day goes well, or that she will feel no worry as the morning goes on. Worry about real problems, and real help such as a doctor for racing fear that does not ease, still have their place.
