Rest Beyond Concentration

Ashtavakra Gita 18.32

Hearing the truth as it is, a dull person only grows duller. Or someone not dull at all draws back and shrinks, as if he were. Fixing the mind on one point, or holding it still, is what dull people practise hard. The steady see nothing left to do. They stay in their own state, like one asleep.

Three words carry the verse. Ekagrata is one-pointedness, from eka, one, and agra, tip: the mind held on a single point. Nirodha is restraint, from ni and rudh, to hold back: the mind stopped by force. Dhira, the steady one, is someone whose understanding has settled and no longer wobbles. The first half says what happens when the plain truth is heard. A slow listener takes it badly and grows duller. Even a sharp one may flinch and shrink, because the teaching leaves nothing to grab. The second half names what such people reach for instead: concentration and restraint, practised hard. Ashtavakra calls this the work of the deluded, because it treats the self as something far away that must be reached by effort. The steady see no task left. They stay in their own state, which is the self as it already is, the way a sleeper lies without arranging anything. The verse answers Janaka's old question about how freedom is won. The teacher's reply is that it is not won. Effort belongs to the one who thinks something is missing. What the verse asks of the listener is to look at what the straining is for.

A swimmer who thrashes and clenches to stay up tires and sinks. Lying back with the arms loose, the same swimmer floats. The thrashing is the practice of concentration and restraint. The floating is resting in one's own state, where the water was already holding up the body.

1. Pick one ordinary moment today, such as waiting for the kettle or standing at a bus stop. 2. For two minutes, notice whether you are gripping anything: jaw, shoulders, a held-in thought you are forcing away. 3. Do not fix the grip. Just see it and let the moment be as it is. 4. Once, before bed, ask yourself what you are still trying to reach, and notice that the body is already lying down.

A woman wakes at five to sit in silence. She grips her attention like a rope, jaw tight, glancing at the timer, annoyed each time her mind wanders. She ends the sitting more tired than she began. The verse speaks to exactly this. Ashtavakra says forcing the mind to one point or holding it still is what the deluded practise hard, while the steady see nothing to be done. Applied here, she would first notice the grip itself, the clenched jaw and the quarrel with her own thoughts. She would see that the straining is one more thing happening, and that the one watching it is not straining. Then the sitting could be less a contest and more a lying back. Ordinary experience agrees that forced attention is tiring and that tension in the body feeds a restless mind. The verse does not promise that thoughts will stop or that the quarrel will end by morning. It is also no substitute for care from a doctor if sleeplessness or anxiety is heavy and long.
