The deluded man finds no peace, whether he strives or does not strive. The wise one is at peace by certainty of the truth alone. The Self is pure, awake, dear, whole, free of the world's elaboration, free of illness. The people who give themselves to practice do not know that Self.
Ashtavakra uses a few words that carry the whole teaching. Mudha, the deluded one, comes from a root meaning to be bewildered. Prajna, the wise one, is the person whose knowing is clear. Tattva-nishchaya is certainty about tattva, the truth as it stands. Nirvriti is peace, a settling after running about. Abhyasa is practice, going over something again and again. The first line closes both doors for the bewildered man. Effort does not bring him peace, and neither does giving up effort. The wise man is different. Certainty about the truth is enough for him, and the word 'alone' matters, because nothing is added to it. The second line says what that truth is. The Self is pure, awake and dear. It is whole, with nothing missing. It carries none of the spread-out world of elaboration, and it has no disease. Those who are devoted to practice, Ashtavakra says, do not know it. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's reply is that a Self already whole cannot be produced by work, so work aimed at producing it misses. What the text asks of the listener is to be certain of what is already so.
A man turns the house upside down for his spectacles, then collapses in the armchair, worn out. They have been on his forehead all along. Hunting and resting both fail to help him. The moment he knows where they are, the search ends. Peace is like that: it comes from the plain knowing of what is already there.
1. Today, when you notice yourself restless or trying hard to feel calm, stop for one minute and sit still. 2. Notice that you are aware of the restlessness. The part that notices is not restless. 3. Do not try to change what you notice. Let the effort to be calm drop for that minute. 4. Later, note whether anything was missing in that minute, other than the habit of reaching.
A retired teacher lies awake at two in the morning. She has tried the breathing, the counting, the dark room, and each failure makes her more alert. She now lies there working at sleep like a job. Ashtavakra's teaching starts by taking the job away. Peace, he says, does not come from effort, and the bewildered man fails whether he strives or slackens. So the first step is to see the straining itself. She notices that she is awake, and that the one who notices is quietly still, even while thoughts run. The text teaches that this witnessing Self is already pure and whole, and needs nothing from her tonight. Her grip on the night loosens a little, since there is no prize left to chase. Ordinary experience confirms one small part of this: trying hard to fall asleep tends to keep a person awake. The teaching does not promise that she will sleep. It does not treat long-running sleeplessness, which is a matter for a doctor, and it does not remove the worry that brought her to the ceiling.
