The bewildered man does not reach liberation by action shaped into practice. Blessed is the one who, by discernment alone, stands free and still. The bewildered man does not attain that Brahman, because he wishes to become it. The steady one, though he wishes for nothing, already shares the nature of the supreme Brahman.

Ashtavakra uses two words for two kinds of people. The mudha is the bewildered one, from a root meaning to be stupefied. The dhira is the steady one, whose mind does not shake. Between them stand two things: abhyasa and vijnana. Abhyasa is practice, doing a thing again and again to build something. Vijnana is discernment, a clear seeing that comes apart from the ordinary run of thoughts. The bewildered man treats liberation as a place far off, reached by repeated effort. Ashtavakra says that road does not arrive. Practice makes something new, and Brahman is not made. The bewildered man also fails for a second reason: he wishes to become Brahman. Wishing to become assumes he is not it now. That assumption is the bewilderment itself. The blessed one is different. He sees what is so, and that seeing is enough. He stands free and does not act to get free. The steady one wants nothing, and yet he already shares the nature of the supreme Brahman, because it was never missing in him. This is taught because Janaka has been asking how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's answer is that it is not won. It is recognised. The verse asks the listener to look at the wish to become, and see that the wish stands in the way.

A man hunts through the house for his glasses, getting more frantic each minute, while they sit on top of his head. Every room he searches only extends the search. The glasses are the Self, the searching is the wish to become, and finding comes the moment he stops looking elsewhere.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with no aim. Do not try to calm down or reach any state. 2. When the thought 'I am not there yet' appears, notice it and name it as a thought, nothing more. 3. Tomorrow, pick one task and do it without asking whether it is bringing you closer to anything. 4. At day's end, note one moment when you were simply present, with no wish to be elsewhere.

A woman lies awake at two in the morning, telling herself she must fall asleep now. She checks the clock, works out how few hours remain, and tightens with each minute. The harder she tries, the further sleep goes. The verse speaks to this knot. Ashtavakra teaches that the bewildered person strains toward what the steady one already rests in. Applied here, the first step is to see that the straining is what keeps her up. The second is to stop measuring herself against a state she thinks she lacks. The third is to let the body lie quiet without a demand on it, as the steady one is said to stand without seeking. Ordinary experience bears out that sleep does not come on command. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise sleep, and it does not cure insomnia. Where sleeplessness goes on for weeks, or comes with low mood, pain or breathing trouble, a doctor should be seen. The teaching speaks to the grasping, and the body's needs still need ordinary care.
