Meaning · English

Without a footing, restless with grasping, fools feed the cycle of worldly life. The wise have cut the root of this trouble. The fool does not find peace, because he is trying to quiet himself. The wise one has made certain of what is true, and his mind is calm at all times.

Ashtavakra opens with two words. Nirādhāra means without a foundation, nothing underneath to stand on. Graha means grasping, seizing at things. He says the fools are restless with grasping and have no footing, so they feed samsara, the round of worldly life, with their own effort. The wise have cut the root of that trouble. Then comes the center of the teaching. The fool, he says, finds no peace because he wants to bring peace about. The word is shamitum, to quiet or pacify. Wanting to quiet the mind is itself one more grasping, one more movement, so the quieting never finishes. The wise one does something different. He has made certain of what is true, which is tattva, the thing as it is. Ashtavakra teaches that this certainty is what the wise stand on. Their mind is calm at all times, because calm was never something they had to make. It is why the teaching comes here: Janaka's question is how freedom is won, and Ashtavakra answers that winning is the very mistake. Nothing in the verse asks the listener to try harder. It asks them to see what the trying is made of.

A man sits on a rumpled bedsheet and tugs at the wrinkles. Each pull creates a new fold, because his own weight keeps the cloth creased. The sheet is the mind, the tugging is the effort to quiet it, and the sitter is the one who is already the witness.

1. Tonight, when you notice you are telling yourself to calm down, stop giving the order. 2. Sit or stand for two minutes and let the restlessness be there, like weather outside a window. 3. Ask once, quietly: who is watching this restlessness? 4. Notice that the watcher is not restless. Leave it at that and carry on with your evening.

A man lies awake at two in the morning, a hard conversation with his brother waiting tomorrow. He keeps telling himself to relax, checks the clock, and grows more wound up with each failed attempt. Ordinary experience confirms that straining to fall asleep keeps sleep away. Ashtavakra's teaching changes the moment step by step. First, the man sees that the command to be calm is itself part of the agitation. Second, he stops issuing it and lets the worry sit there without feeding it. Third, he turns to what is watching the worry, which the text teaches is already still and untouched. The restlessness may continue for a while, but he is no longer adding to it. A good family doctor would add that a body that stays awake night after night, or a mind weighed down by dread for weeks, needs a physician's attention, not only a better view. The verse does not promise sleep, does not remove the coming conversation, and does not replace care where care is needed. It says only where the wise stand while the weather passes.
