Where is sight of the self for one who leans on what is seen? The steady ones do not look at this thing and that thing. They see the self, which does not perish. And where is stillness for the deluded one who forces it by insistence? For the steady one, who delights in the self alone, it is there at every time, and it was never made.
Four words carry the teaching. Drishta is what is seen, from drish, to see: every object, thought and mood that appears before awareness. Nirodha is stilling or restraint, from rudh, to hold back. Svarama is one who delights in the self, from sva, own, and arama, a garden to rest in. Akritrima is the unmade, from kri, to make: what no effort produced. Ashtavakra says the self cannot be found by someone whose attention rests on what is seen, because it is not one more thing seen. The steady ones do not go from this object to that. They see the self that does not perish, the witness in which all seeing happens. Then he turns to the deluded. They try to make the mind still by holding it down, and he asks where stillness could be in that. A grip is itself a restlessness. The steady one rests in the self and delights there, and for that person stillness is natural and always present. Janaka has asked how peace is won. The answer is that it is not won, since winning is the very effort that disturbs it. The verse asks the listener to stop treating peace as a product and to turn from the seen to the seer.
Looking at a garden through a window, you see trees, a wall, a cat, and never the glass. The glass is what makes the seeing possible. The garden is the seen, and the self, the teaching says, is closer to the clear glass than to anything in the view.
1. Once today, sit for two minutes by a window and let whatever is in view be there. Do not try to quiet your thoughts. 2. When a thought or worry shows up, notice that you are aware of it. Notice that the awareness was already there before the thought arrived. 3. If you catch yourself gripping at calm, loosen the grip and let the effort go. Notice what remains when the effort stops.
A man lies awake at two in the morning, telling himself to stop thinking and go to sleep. Every order makes his mind busier. He checks the clock, counts the hours left, and tightens further. The verse speaks to this. Ashtavakra says stillness gained by forcing is not stillness, because the forcing is the unrest. The man's effort to hold his thoughts down is one more thought. What the verse would change, step by step, is small. He notices that he is trying. He sees that the trying is the thing being watched. He stops adding orders to the pile, and the thoughts, left without a fight, stop being fed. Ordinary experience bears this out: sleep tends to arrive when pursuit of it is dropped. The verse does not promise that sleep will come that night, or that worry will leave. It does not replace a doctor for long-standing sleeplessness, low mood or illness. It says only where the text finds stillness: in resting as the witness, not in the contest with the mind.
