Practice Without Recognition

Ashtavakra Gita 18.42

Meaning · English

One meditates on being, another on nothing at all, another on the absence of both, and so each stays restless. Dull minds practise meditation on the pure, undivided self. They do not know it, because of delusion, and so they live out their whole lives without being cooled and quenched.

Three words carry the teaching. Bhavana is holding something in the mind and building it up, from bhu, to become. Sammoha is bewilderment, a thorough clouding. Anirvrita means not cooled, from nir-vri: a fire that has not gone out, a thirst not quenched. Ashtavakra names three kinds of meditator. One fixes the mind on existence. One fixes it on nothing. One tries to rest in the absence of both. Each is still doing something, and a doer is still agitated. Then he says the same of those who meditate on the pure self that has no second. They make the self an object to be produced in the mind. But the self is not produced. It is what is already aware, so it can only be known, and the text says these people do not know it because delusion covers the seeing. The reason is given in the last line: they go through life unquenched. Practice that never reaches recognition leaves the thirst where it was. Janaka has been told again and again that the self is already free. This verse shows why effort aimed at the self misses it. It asks the listener to notice the difference between making an inner state and seeing what is already the case.

A man hunts through the house for his glasses while they sit on his own forehead. Each room he searches only deepens the worry. Meditating on the self is the searching. The self is the seer, already present, and no search is needed to find it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a chair and do nothing to your mind. Do not empty it, fill it, or watch it. 2. Notice the first small urge to arrange your thoughts or fix your state. Name it quietly: doing. 3. Notice whatever is aware of that urge. Rest as that awareness for a few breaths without trying to hold it. 4. Afterward, write one line on whether the restlessness came from the thoughts or from the effort.

A retired bus conductor sits on a cushion at dawn, jaw tight. He is trying to think of nothing. Each stray thought about his daughter's wedding bills feels like failure, so he pushes harder and finishes more tired than he began. The verse speaks to him this way. Ashtavakra teaches that trying to build a state, whether of being, of nothing, or of the pure self, is itself a doing, and doing keeps the restlessness alive. The teaching points to what already sees the thoughts come and go. It asks for recognition, not another task. The conductor can stop grading the sitting. He can let the wedding thoughts pass through and notice that something in him was aware of them all along and is not upset by them. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: the harder a person tries not to think of something, the more it returns. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that money worries vanish or that the bills get paid, and it does not replace a doctor when sleeplessness or low mood goes on for weeks.
