The Leaning Mind

Ashtavakra Gita 18.44

Meaning · English

The mind of one who seeks freedom does not stand without something to lean on. The mind of the free one leans on nothing, wants nothing, and is so at all times.

Two words carry the verse. Mumukshu means one who wants to be free, from the root muc, to release. Niralamba means without support, from alamba, something you hold on to or hang from. The text sets them side by side. The seeker's mind needs a prop. It needs a practice, a teacher, a goal, a picture of what it hopes to become. Without one, it feels it will fall. The free one's mind has no prop and does not miss it. Nishkama, the second word, means free of kama, the pull of wanting. Ashtavakra says the free mind is like this always, not on good days. Why say it to Janaka now? The chapter keeps describing the one who knows, and here it draws the plainest line between the two. Needing a support is itself the mark of the seeker. The verse does not call the props wrong. It says the seeker cannot do without them, and the free one has no use for them. What it asks of the listener is honesty. See which supports your mind is leaning on, and notice that the leaning is felt as need.

A child learning to swim holds the pool's edge, then a float, then a teacher's hand. Each feels necessary. Years later the same swimmer floats in open water holding nothing and never thinks of it. The seeker's mind is at the edge; the free mind is the one afloat.

1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit with a pen and list what your mind leans on to feel settled: a routine, a phone, a plan, a person's approval. 2. Beside each item, write whether you reach for it from need or from simple liking. 3. Tomorrow, choose one item and leave it out for an hour. Notice what the mind does, and what it asks for. Only watch; do not argue with it.

A man sits in his parked car outside the hospital, phone in hand, scrolling before he goes in to see his father. He is not reading anything. The phone is something to hold. The verse changes the moment in small steps. He notices the hand reaching. He sees that the reaching comes from dread, not from interest. He puts the phone down and feels the dread without a prop for a minute. Then he walks in. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind often grabs at distraction when it is uneasy, and that the grabbing passes once it is seen. The teaching goes further, because the Gita speaks of a mind that needs no support at all, and that is the text's own claim about the one who is free. The verse does not promise the dread will vanish, or that his father will recover, and it is no replacement for the doctors inside. It describes where a mind rests when nothing is held.
