Seeing the leopards of sense-objects, the frightened look for shelter. They rush into a cave, to win the single-pointed hold of restraint. But seeing the lion who has no desire left, the elephants of sense-objects slip away in silence. Those who cannot even flee come to serve him, fawning and flattering.

Two kinds of people meet sense-objects in this teaching. The first are frightened of them. Objects here are sights, sounds, tastes and pleasures, and they are pictured as leopards. The frightened run to a cave and work at nirodha, restraint, the stopping of the mind's movement, and at ekagrata, one-pointedness, holding it on a single thing. Ashtavakra does not mock this. He shows that it is a retreat made out of fear. The second kind is the lion. He is called nirvasana. Vasana means a lingering impression, a trace left in the mind by past pleasure that keeps pulling toward more. Nir means without. The lion has no such pull left, so objects have nothing to grip. Ashtavakra says they behave like elephants before a lion. Some slip off quietly. Those that cannot leave stay and serve, flattering him, because nothing they offer can move him. Ashtavakra says this to Janaka to show where freedom lies. It lies in the end of craving, not in guarding the mind against objects. Objects keep their power only while craving gives it to them. The teaching asks the listener to notice whether they are running from objects or no longer wanting them.

A boy afraid of a barking dog crosses the road and keeps his eye on it all the way home. A man who has no fear of dogs walks straight past, and the dog soon loses interest. The first is restraint born of fear. The second is the lion: objects still exist, but they have no hold.

1. Choose one small pull you feel daily, such as your phone, a sweet, or a certain news site. 2. Next time it calls, do not run from it and do not fight it. Stay where you are for two minutes. 3. Watch the wanting itself: where it sits, how it rises, whether it fades. 4. That evening, note whether the object or the wanting held the power.

A man who quit smoking stands at the tea stall outside a hospital where his friends are lighting up. He grips his cup and stares at the road. He is working hard, but all his effort goes into avoiding the smoke. The verse points at something quieter. In that moment he could see that the pull is a habit in him, built by repetition, and that the smoke only wakes it. He watches it rise, peak and ease. Ordinary experience agrees that a craving left unfed does fade, and that fighting it often keeps it in view. Where craving has lost its hold, the stall is just a stall. The old teaching claims more than a changed habit, though. It speaks of desire's impressions ending, which is a claim about the self that this account does not touch. The verse does not say craving ends in one sitting. It also does not replace a doctor, and anyone struggling with addiction should seek one.
