Meaning · English

The fearless one, whose mind is steady, takes up no practice meant to produce freedom. Seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting, he lives at his ease. Having simply heard the truth of what is, his understanding is clean and he is unshaken. He regards no conduct as right, none as wrong, and indifference as neither.

Three words carry it. Muktikarika means 'maker of freedom': mukti is release, from muc, to loosen, and kara is one who makes. It names any practice done in order to produce liberation. Yukta-manasa is a mind yoked, joined, steady. Audasya is indifference, from the sense of sitting apart and standing off from things. Ashtavakra says the fearless, steady one does not take up a freedom-making practice. He sees, hears, touches, smells and eats, and stays at ease. The second line gives the reason: he has only heard the truth of what is, and the hearing was enough. His understanding is clean, and nothing in him is stirred up. He holds no conduct as the right one to keep, none as the wrong one to avoid, and not even indifference as a stance to adopt. The question behind it is Janaka's from the start: how is freedom won? Ashtavakra's answer is that the self is already free, so there is nothing to manufacture. A practice assumes a gap to be crossed, and the text says there is no gap. Fear is what drives the effort, and in this teaching it falls away once the truth is heard. The listener is left with a question: how much of their striving is fear dressed as discipline?

A man tears the house apart looking for his spectacles while they sit on his forehead. Every drawer he opens is a practice, and every hour of searching is effort. The thing sought was never lost. Hearing where it is ends the search; nothing more needs doing.

1. Choose one ordinary meal today and eat it without adding any exercise: no breath-counting, no goal, only tasting. 2. Afterwards, notice whether any thought said you were doing it wrong or should be doing something better. 3. If one did, name it quietly as the urge to produce something, and go on with the day. 4. Do the same for five minutes of walking or listening this week, and notice what is left when the effort is dropped.

A retired schoolteacher walks the lane at dawn, checking himself at every step: am I calm enough, present enough, doing this properly? By the third corner he is tired and tense, and the walk has become an exam. Ashtavakra's teaching would change one thing. The seeing, hearing and breathing were already happening, with no one marking them. The checking is added on top. Dropping the grading leaves the lane, the birdsong and the cool air as they were. Ordinary experience agrees with part of this: a mind watching itself for faults is usually less at ease than a mind occupied with the thing in front of it. The teaching goes further than that, though. It says freedom is not a result of effort at all, and it says so as the text's own teaching about the self. It does not promise the walk will be free of worry, grief or aching knees. It is also no reason to skip a doctor's advice or a treatment where one is needed. It speaks to the extra strain of striving, not to the body's actual needs.
