Straight, like a child
Ashtavakra Gita 18.49
Meaning · English
When a thing comes up to be done, the upright one does it then and there, whether it is called good or bad. What he does is like a child's doing.
Three words carry it. Riju means upright, straight, unbent: someone with no twist between what the moment asks and what he does. Bala means child, and balavat means childlike. Cheshta means movement, doing, effort, the whole stir of a life in action. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that when a task arrives, the upright one does it when it arrives. He does not rehearse it beforehand or hold it up against an image of himself. The words 'good or bad' mean whatever people would label either way. His acts carry no scheming, no bargaining and no keeping of accounts. A child moves like this. It picks up, runs, shares or refuses, and it is not performing for anyone. The teaching comes after Ashtavakra has said that the knower sits at ease while seeing, hearing and eating. Janaka's natural question is how such a person acts at all. The answer is that action goes on, but nobody stands behind it deciding what it will make of him. The text is speaking of the one who has recognised the self as the witness, not describing a method for the restless. It asks the listener to notice how much of ordinary effort is watching oneself act.
A small child sees a neighbour's bag split open on the path and runs to gather the oranges. Then the child wanders off to play, with no thought of being thanked or of having been good. The oranges are picked up and nothing is kept. The upright one's doing is like that: complete in the moment and then gone.
1. Today, when a small task turns up (a cup to wash, a message to answer, a door to hold), do it at once, before you start weighing it. 2. While doing it, notice any voice that adds 'look how helpful' or 'why me'. Just notice it, and carry on with the task. 3. When it is done, leave it. Do not replay it or mention it. Try this for three tasks, then look back and see how light or heavy each one felt.
A man on a station platform sees an old woman's shopping bag split, tins rolling toward the track. For a second he feels two pulls. One says go. The other asks who is watching and whether he will look foolish. The verse's teaching removes the second pull. He crouches, gathers the tins, hands them over, and his own train is already arriving. Nothing was decided in an inner courtroom. Ordinary experience bears this much out: hesitation usually grows when we start watching ourselves. Step by step, the moment asks, the hands answer, and the matter ends there, with no tally kept of credit or blame. The verse does not promise that the act will turn out well, that the old woman will be unhurt, or that he will not later feel worry or regret. It also gives no advice about anything that needs a doctor or careful thought. The text speaks of one whose action has become this straight, and says nothing to excuse carelessness in someone still weighing every step.
