Meaning · English

Shiva, Shakti, Kama, Earth, then Sun, the cool-rayed Moon, Smara, Hamsa, Indra, and after them Para, Mara, Hara. Mother, these letters, joined at their ends by three heart-syllables, become the limbs of your name.

The poet is speaking to the Goddess about her name, and the name is a mantra of fifteen syllables. Three words matter here. Varna means a letter or syllable, and also a colour, something that gives a thing its shape. Nama means name. Avayava means a limb or part of a body. The verse says that the letters take on the state of being limbs of her name, so the name is treated as a body with parts. The list is a code. Shiva, Shakti, Kama, Earth, Sun, Moon, Smara, Hamsa, Indra, Para, Mara and Hara are ordinary names for gods and things, and each stands for one letter. The tradition holds that the list hides the mantra, and the verse does not write it out. Hrllekha is the heart-syllable, written on the heart. Three of them close the three sections, and with them the fifteen letters become a name. Lakshmidhara reads the three sections as three parts of one whole, and the commentators agree the three endings are what bind the letters into a single name. The poet teaches that she is not reached by pointing at her from outside. Her name is built from the very gods and powers named in the list, so the name carries her form. That is why the list begins with Shiva and Shakti, joined as in the earlier verses. The verse asks only that the listener see the name as a body made of parts, with a heart at the end of each section.

Think of a long cord with three knots tied at even distances. The knots do not add length. They mark the cord into three runs and hold it together as one piece. The fifteen letters are the cord, the three heart-syllables are the knots, and the whole cord is her single name.
