Known or Unnoticed

Yoga Sutras 4.17

Meaning · English

A thing is known or left unknown according to whether the mind-field is coloured by it. The mind needs that colouring before it can know the thing.

Take the words one at a time. Vastu is the thing out there, the object. Citta is the mind-field, the inner space where knowing happens. Uparaga is a colouring, a taking-on of tint. Apekshatva means dependence, a needing. Jnata and ajnata are known and not known. Put together: the mind-field depends on being coloured by a thing, and so the thing is known when the colouring happens and unknown when it does not. The object may be sitting right there. Without the colouring, it stays unknown to that mind. Patanjali says this because the sutras just before it set objects and minds on separate paths. If they are separate, the question is how one reaches the other. His answer is that they meet only when the mind takes on the object's form. This also explains why the same thing is seen by one person and missed by another. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, compares it to a magnet. The magnet draws iron only when the two are brought close. The object likewise draws the mind into its shape only when it touches the mind. For Vyasa, the mind is known to be coloured, not self-knowing. The commentators who follow him differ mostly in how they describe this colouring, not in the main point.

In a loud, crowded room, a hundred voices pass by and none registers. Then someone across the room says your name, and it lands at once. The sound was always in the air. Only that one was taken up. Knowing happens where the mind is coloured by something, and the rest goes unknown.

1. Pick one ordinary walk or commute today, five to ten minutes long. 2. Halfway through, stop and name three things within sight that you had not noticed so far. 3. Ask of each one: it was there the whole time, so what in me was coloured by other things instead? 4. That evening, write down one thing you noticed and one thing you suspect you missed.
