The searchers came at last to the edge of the southern ocean, the great seat of Varuna, and heard its waves crash and roar. They sat down on the wooded shore, and grief settled over them. The month they had been given was gone, and they had found nothing. Even the spring trees, heavy with blossom, only made the pain sharper. Then Angada, the prince, broad-shouldered and strong, stood up and spoke gently to the chiefs. "Do you see that the day our king set has passed? The month is spent, and nothing is left to hope for. Sugriva trusted you, and he sent you out under my lead. For people like us, who have failed his order, I think death is the only way left."
"Let us stop eating and die here," Angada went on. "Our king is stern and quick to anger, proud and fierce as fire. He will never forgive a search that came to nothing. Better to leave our homes, our wives and our little ones than to fall by his hand. And do not think he will spare me because I am Vali's son. It was Rama, not Sugriva, who made me heir. Sugriva has long been my enemy, and he will remember. So I will lie here by the sea, and fast, and die." The chiefs, all afraid, agreed with him. Then Tara spoke to comfort them. "Come and live in that great cavern. Magic built it. There is water and fruit, and no enemy, not even Rama, can reach us there."
Hanuman listened, and he saw what was happening. Angada had the strength of a warrior and the mind of a ruler, growing brighter year by year like the young moon. But now, worn out by the search, he was following Tara instead of his king. So Hanuman chose his words with care, meaning to pull the others away from the prince. "Angada, you are mightier than your father was. But our people go where their wives and children are. They will not stay with you in a cave. They will slip back to Sugriva, and you will be left alone, as weak as a blade of grass. Lakshmana's arrows can split a mountain like a flower; they will split that cave. Come home with us instead. Sugriva will share the kingdom with you. He honours your mother. You are her only child. Come home."
"What truth is there in Sugriva?" Angada answered. "He took his own brother's wife while his brother was alive. He barred the cave's door while his brother fought for his life inside. He forgot Rama, who saved him, until Lakshmana's anger frightened him into searching. Whatever he is, he will not spare me, the heir he never wanted. He will throw me into a prison for the rest of my life. Better to starve here. Go home without me. Bow to Sugriva and to Rama and Lakshmana in my name. Greet Ruma kindly. And comfort my mother Tara, or she will die of grief." Then he lay down on the sacred darbha grass and wept. The old chiefs wept too. They laid the grass pointing south, sat facing east, and said together, "Here we die with Angada."
Then the king of the vultures came. Sampati, Jatayu' elder brother, once the greatest of all birds, looked down from the slopes of the Vindhya hill and saw the monkeys sitting still. He was glad. "Fate brings me a feast at last," he said. "These ones who mean to die will fill my belly." Angada heard, and in his anguish he turned to Hanuman. "Death himself has come for us, angry for Sita's sake. We failed our king and failed Rama. Think of Jatayu, who fought Ravana and died trying to save her. How blessed he is now. He has nothing to fear from Sugriva. So much sorrow came from one rash promise of King Dasharatha." Sampati heard the name, and his heart shook. "Who speaks of my brother's death? Tell me again how he fell. But first help me down. The sun burnt my wings, and I cannot fly."
The monkeys did not trust him. They thought it might be a trick. But then they reasoned, "If he eats us, we only get the death we already chose." So they rose and helped the great bird down. Angada told him everything. He told of Vali and Sugriva, sons of Riksharaja. He told how Rama, obeying his father, went into the Dandaka forest with Sita and Lakshmana; how Ravana stole her; how Jatayu, old and bleeding, pulled Ravana from his chariot and held him off for a while, then died, and Rama gave him his last rites. He told of the pact with Sugriva and Vali's death. "We searched everywhere and found nothing," he said. "Then we lost a whole month wandering in a cave made by Maya's magic. So now we have decided to fast and die."
Tears filled Sampati's eyes. "My brother, killed by Ravana, and I am too old and wingless to do anything but mourn. Long ago, when Vritra died, we two flew in our pride toward the sun. My brother's wings began to fail in the heat, so I spread mine over him, and mine burned away. I fell here on Vindhya and never heard what became of him." Angada asked, "Then tell us, where does Ravana live?" And hope woke in them all as Sampati answered. "I saw Ravana carry a young woman through the air, shining with jewels, crying 'Rama, Lakshmana,' dropping her ornaments as she struggled. He lives in Lanka, built by Vishvakarma, across the southern sea. Sita is there, guarded by monsters, still in her silk, and sad. It is a hundred leagues south. We vultures, of Vinata's line, can see that far. From here I can see Ravana and the lady. Find a way across. And take me to the sea, so I can make offerings to my brother."
They sprang to their feet, and Jambavan asked, "Where is Sita? Who saw her taken?" Sampati explained. "While I lay here dying, my son Suparsva fed me morning and evening. One night he came back with no food. He said that at dawn, on Mahendra's peak, he saw a dark giant flying south with a lady as bright as morning in his grip. Holy spirits gathered and cried, 'Is Sita still alive?' and named her captor. He watched her hair streaming and her silk torn, and forgot to hunt. I was furious, but what could a bird without wings do? I can still help with my words." Then Sampati made offerings in the sea for his brother's spirit, bathed, and said to Angada, "Now hear how I first learned her fate. I fell here, burnt, and lay seven nights in a swoon. When I woke, I went to find the sage Nisakar, whom Jatayu and I used to visit."
"Wild animals followed the sage home like tame creatures," Sampati said. "He looked at me in wonder. 'Where are your feathers? I knew two vulture brothers who could take any shape. You are the elder. What happened?' I told him, ashamed. 'My brother and I, out of foolish pride, swore before the saints to chase the sun to where it sets. We flew so high that cities looked like chariot wheels and rivers like silver threads. Then the heat beat us. Jatayu fell without a word, and I dived after him and shielded him with my wings, and they burned away. He fell in Janasthana. I fell here. Now I will throw myself off this mountain.' The sage thought for a while and said, 'Your wings will grow again. A prince named Rama will lose his wife to Ravana. Monkeys sent by him will come here, and you will tell them where she is. Stay. Wait. Then your wings will return.'"
"Then the sage went to heaven," Sampati said. "For a hundred years I watched from this height, night and day, waiting for you. Many times I doubted. But his words kept me alive, like a lamp in the dark." As he finished speaking, right before the monkeys' eyes, new young wings began to grow from his sides. Joy filled him. "My wings are back, the ones the sun took, by the grace of that great sage. I feel young and strong again. Go on, all of you, and work hard. You will find her alive. Look at these new wings and be sure of it." Then he leapt from the crag to try his wings in his own sky. His words had stilled every doubt, and every heart among the monkeys was filled with courage.
