Subtle practice, rare fortune

Meaning · English

Gheranda says: Chanda, you have heard the meditation on light. Now hear from me the subtle meditation. It belongs to the one in whom, through the force of great good fortune, the coiled power, kundalini, has woken.

Gheranda is speaking to his student Chanda, and this line is a hinge. The first half closes the teaching before it: Chanda has now heard the meditation on light, which the text calls tejodhyana. The second half opens a new one: sukshmadhyana, the subtle meditation. Sukshma means fine, thin, hard to grasp. Dhyana is meditation, attention held steady on one thing. So the name promises a finer kind of sit than the light meditation. Then comes the condition. Gheranda says this meditation belongs to the person in whom kundalini is awake. Kundalini means the coiled one. In the tradition's account it is a power lying coiled at the base of the body. The text does not describe it here. It only says that for this practice it has stirred. The reason given is not effort or discipline. It is bahubhagyavasat, by the force of much good fortune. The text frames the waking as something that comes to a person, not something taken. That also explains why the line opens with a warning of rarity before it teaches anything. It tells Chanda what kind of listener this teaching suits. For a practitioner, the line asks nothing to be done yet. It says the subtle meditation follows the coarser one, and that its door is the waking of kundalini. What the subtle meditation actually is must be read in the lines that follow.

A retired watchmaker bends over a tray of tiny gears. After an hour his eyes see finer than they did at the start, and he cannot say how. That is a fair picture of what the text means by moving from a coarse object of attention to a subtle one. Today's mainstream view agrees on a modest point. Attention is trainable, and repeated quiet practice tends to make it steadier and more discerning. People also differ in how easily they settle, because of temperament, sleep, stress and circumstance. A teacher might call that luck. It is not the same as the text's claim. Kundalini has no match in anatomy or physiology. No coiled structure at the base of the spine has been found, and the idea of a power waking belongs to the tradition's account, not to medicine. Strong sensations, heat, tingling or emotion can arise in long sits. They are better treated as experiences to report to a teacher than as proof of anything. Anyone who finds sitting distressing, or who has a history of panic or trauma, should go slowly and with guidance.
