Why the Teaching Begins

Yogatattva Upanishad 1

Meaning · English

I will set out the essence of yoga, wishing well to those who practise it. Whoever hears it, and whoever reads it, is freed from every kind of wrong.

This is the opening line of the Upanishad, and it does three things: it names the subject, gives the speaker's reason, and makes a promise. The subject is yoga-tattva. Yoga here is the discipline the whole text is about. Tattva means roughly 'that-ness', the thing as it really is, its essence. So the speaker is not offering a collection of tips. He says he will state what yoga comes down to. The reason is given in a single phrase: a wish for the good of yogis. The Upanishad says plainly that the teaching is offered out of goodwill toward people who practise. It does not present itself as a demonstration of the author's learning. The promise is that anyone who hears this teaching, or reads it, is released from all papa. Papa is usually rendered 'sin', and in the tradition it means wrong action and the weight it leaves behind. The text names two ways to receive the teaching, by ear from a teacher or by eye from the page, and attaches the same result to both. Opening claims like this are common in Upanishads and manuals. They tell the listener the matter is worth attention. The verse gives no practice and no instruction. It says who the teaching is for, why it is given, and what the text claims for those who take it in. The speaker is not named here.

A retired postman sits on the verandah in the evening, reading a small book aloud to his wife while she shells peas. Neither expects anything dramatic. The reading simply settles the hour. That ordinary picture is close to what today's understanding can support. Attending to a text slowly, aloud or in silence, steadies attention, and a good family doctor would agree that calm, regular routines help people feel more settled. Reflecting on one's own conduct can also ease a burden of guilt, which psychology treats as a real and useful thing to work through. The claim itself is a different matter. That hearing or reading frees a person from all wrongdoing is the tradition's promise, made in a religious frame. There is no evidence for it that medicine or psychology could test, and it should not be taken as a measurable effect. Nor does modern knowledge have any match for papa as a stored-up weight. It stays a devotional idea. The goodwill the verse names, a teacher wishing practitioners well, is easy to recognise in any good teaching.
