You have known the self, one and undying, as it truly is. You are steady in that knowing. How then can you delight in earning wealth? Joy in things that are only appearances comes from not knowing the self. Greed rises out of that ignorance, as when a shell is mistaken for silver.

Ashtavakra is speaking to a king who has just said he knows the self. Two words carry the verse. Atman is the self, the one who is aware. Avinashin means imperishable, that which cannot be destroyed. Ajnana is not-knowing, a missing recognition rather than a sin. Ashtavakra's first question is gentle and sharp together. If Janaka has really seen the one self that cannot perish, what is left for earning to add? Wealth can only add to what can be lost. Then he gives the cause of wanting. Delight in objects, he says, grows where the self is not known, and greed is the grasping that follows. His picture is a piece of mother-of-pearl lying in the sun. It flashes, a man takes it for silver, and he runs to get it. The flash was real. The silver was never there. So the text does not call wealth a crime, and it does not call the world a lie. It says the longing was built on a mistaken sight. Janaka has spoken his awakening in the chapter before, and here the teacher tests it. Words of wonder cost nothing, so Ashtavakra asks whether the old hunger still has its hold. The verse asks the listener to look at where wanting begins.

On a hot summer road, the tarmac ahead looks like a sheet of water. The driver slows and braces for the splash. Then the road is dry, and the water was only light bending over heat. Greed is that braced attention, aimed at a shimmer the mind had taken for something it needed.

1. Today, notice one moment of wanting something, such as an item in a shop window or a number you hoped to see rise. 2. Stop for ten slow breaths before you act on it. 3. Ask quietly what you hope having it would settle in you. 4. Note whether that need is still there after the wanting passes. Do this once a day this week, and write one line each night.

A man lies awake at two in the morning, checking his bank balance on his phone for the fourth time after a lean month. Each glance makes the number feel heavier. Ordinary experience confirms that worry at night makes small sums loom large. Ashtavakra's verse would change the moment in steps. First, the man sees that the checking is not about the number, because the number has not changed. It is about a restlessness that wants the number to settle it. Second, he sees that the restlessness has a source, which the text calls not knowing the self, and that the wealth is only where the restlessness has landed. Third, he can put the phone down and let the want come and go without obeying it. The text means this as an inquiry into what he is, and he does not have to give up earning. The verse does not pay the rent, mend a real shortage, or remove fear when money is truly short. Sleeplessness that lasts is worth taking to a doctor.
