The Rich Man Running
Ashtavakra Gita 3.3
Meaning · English
In That the whole universe shines forth, as waves rise in the sea. Knowing 'I am That', why do you run about like a poor man?
Ashtavakra's question rests on three words. Sphurati means to shine or throb forth. The text says the universe does not stand apart from the self. It flickers up in it, the way a wave is the sea lifting itself. Taranga is the wave. A wave has a shape and a name, but nothing in it is other than water. So'ham asmi means 'I am That'. 'That' is the one awareness in which everything appears. Dina is a poor, wretched person, someone who lacks and so hurries. The first line says what the world is: a play of the self, with no second thing beside it. The second line says what Janaka has just claimed, that he knows this. The third turns on him: if you are the sea, why do you run like a beggar after more water? The reason Ashtavakra gives is plain. Running comes from a sense of lack, and the text teaches that the self lacks nothing, because everything shines in it. The question does not scold. It points out that Janaka's behaviour has not yet caught up with what he said. It asks the listener to notice where he still hurries as though poor, and to see that the hurry belongs to the wave's forgetting, not to the sea.
A child at the seaside runs up and down the beach with a small cup, anxious to fill a bucket before the water goes. The tide is the whole sea, and every wave that reaches her feet is made of it. The child is the one who runs for want, and the sea is the self that was never short.
1. Today, catch one moment of hurry: a queue, a reply you are rushing to send, a seat you want. 2. Ask silently, 'What am I short of right now?' Give it a few slow breaths. 3. Say 'I am That' once, quietly, and keep doing the task at the pace of someone who has enough. 4. Tonight, recall that moment for a minute and note whether the task still got done.
A man stands in a long queue at a government office, folder pressed to his chest, certain that one missing stamp will send him home with nothing. His shoulders are up. He keeps checking the clock and edges toward the front. The text would change this moment in small steps. First he notices the poor-man feeling as a feeling, a wave that has risen. Then he sees that the folder, the stamp and the clerk belong to the play of the self, and that the sense of lack is not the fact of who he is. Then he does the same work more calmly: he answers the clerk plainly and asks politely what is missing. Ordinary experience agrees on one point, that a hurried person makes more mistakes at the counter. The limit is plain. This does not produce the certificate, soften the clerk, or lift the real worry about money or a deadline. The papers still have to be done properly, and a real need still has to be met.
