Hearing Without Living It

Ashtavakra Gita 3.4

Meaning · English

Though he has heard of the self, pure awareness, utterly beautiful, he stays deeply attached to the organ of pleasure, and so he arrives at stain.

Three words carry the verse. Shuddhachaitanya is pure awareness: shuddha is clean, chaitanya comes from chit, to perceive. Atman is the self, what one is at the root. Malinya is stain or impurity, from mala, dirt. The verse also names the upastha, the lower organ of pleasure, and says the man is asakta, stuck fast to it. The root sanj means to cling. The clauses run in order. He has heard of the self. It is pure awareness, and more beautiful than anything he could crave. Yet he is bound hard to bodily pleasure. So he comes to stain. The stain is not in the self, which the text teaches is clean. It belongs to the clinging. Ashtavakra says this because he is testing Janaka. Just before it he asks why a man who knows the undying self still runs after gain. Hearing the teaching is one thing. Having it settle in the way a person lives is another. He is pointing at the gap between the two. The teaching asks that what is heard and what is done stop living apart.

A man is told that cool, clear water runs under his own floor. He nods, says it sounds lovely, and goes on buying sweet drinks from the stall at the corner, thirsty all day. The water is the self already present. The stall drinks are the pleasures he keeps grabbing, though he has heard of it.

1. Choose one pleasure you reach for out of habit, such as sweets, your phone or a second helping. 2. Today, when the pull comes, wait two minutes before you act. 3. In those minutes, notice the part of you that is watching the pull rise. Notice that it is not itself pulled. 4. Then act or do not, without scolding yourself. Do this once a day for a week and see what you notice.

A man sits alone in a hotel room after a long conference. That afternoon he heard a talk on contentment and agreed with every word. Now it is past midnight, he is tired, and his thumb keeps reaching for the phone and the minibar. The verse speaks to exactly this gap. He has heard of the self, and he is still held fast by pleasure. Seen this way, the trouble is not that he lacks information. The hearing never got down into the hour of craving. What the verse changes is the noticing. He sees the pull as a pull, and sees that something in him is aware of it and is not itself pulled. The teaching says the self stays clean, and that the stain comes from the clinging. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness and loneliness make craving louder. The verse does not promise the craving stops, or that one noticing settles the matter. It does not replace a doctor or counsellor where a habit has become a harm. It names the gap between hearing and living honestly.
