Meaning · English

The sage who knows the Self in all beings, and all beings in the Self, still finds a sense of "mine" following him. That is a wonder. A man who stands in the highest non-duality, set even on liberation, yet falls under the sway of desire and is crippled by the practice of pleasure's games: that, too, is a wonder.

Two wonders are named. The first is about mamatva, "mine-ness", the habit of saying "my" about body, things and people. The second is about kama, desire, the pull toward pleasure. Ashtavakra calls both an ashcharya, a marvel, because they sit so oddly beside what the person already knows. The first line gives that knowledge. The atman, the Self, is seen in all beings, and all beings are seen in the Self. Nothing is left outside it to be owned. Yet the sense of "mine" still trails along. Then comes paramadvaita, supreme non-duality, "not two" at its highest. A person can stand in it and be set even on moksha, liberation, and still be pushed around by desire, weakened by long schooling in play and enjoyment. Why say this to Janaka? He has just spoken his awakening aloud. Ashtavakra answers by pointing at the gap between saying and being. Words about oneness can sit comfortably in the mind while the old grip goes on unchanged. He does not scold. He names the gap as strange and leaves it in plain view. What the verse asks of a listener is honesty: to check whether the "mine" has actually loosened, or whether only the vocabulary has changed.

A man has moved out of his old flat and into a new one, yet at night his hand still reaches for the light switch where it used to be. He knows the wall is different. The hand has not learned it. Knowing oneness is the new flat, and mine-ness is the hand.

1. This evening, pick one ordinary thing you call yours: a cup, a chair, a phone. 2. Hold it for one minute and quietly say "mine". Notice where in your body that word settles or tightens. 3. Lend it to someone for the day, or set it in another room, and watch what the mind does. 4. Tomorrow, note once whether the grip eased even slightly. Write nothing; just notice.

A retired headmaster stands in the corridor on his last afternoon and watches the caretaker unscrew his nameplate from the office door. He knows the school will go on without him. He has said as much in his farewell speech. Still his chest tightens, and he finds himself thinking, that was my office. The verse speaks to this moment. Knowing a thing and being free of the pull toward it are two separate matters. The headmaster can let the tightening be seen for what it is: the old word "mine" arriving on schedule, not a verdict on his worth. He can notice the wanting to hold on without feeding it, thank the caretaker, and walk out. Ordinary experience agrees that a long habit does not vanish because a conclusion has been reached. The text itself calls this gap a wonder, not a failing to be hidden. The verse does not promise that the ache will be gone by evening. It does not replace grief for a lost role, and if the low mood stays for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
