Meaning · English
A wonder: one who has seen craving rise as knowledge's bad friend, who is worn very weak, with the end of his time close at hand, still reaches for craving. And a wonder: one cool toward this world and the next, who tells the lasting from the passing, who longs for freedom, and who is frightened of that very freedom.
Ashtavakra names two wonders, and both are cases of a mind working against itself. Three words carry them. Kama is craving, from kam, to long for. Viveka is discernment, from a root meaning to separate: the knack of telling the lasting from the passing. Moksha is freedom, from muc, to let go. The first wonder is a man who has recognised craving as the enemy of knowledge, a bad friend who spoils clear seeing. He is weak and near the end of his span, and he still reaches for it. He knows the cost and pays it anyway. The second wonder is stranger. This seeker has turned cool toward this world and the next, and he can tell what lasts from what does not. He wants freedom above all. Yet freedom frightens him. Ashtavakra says this to Janaka because Janaka has been speaking of his own waking, and the teacher is showing how a seeker holds back even when he understands. Moksha means letting go, and what goes is the one who clings, the person he has taken himself to be. So the fear is understandable. The text asks the listener to notice both habits in himself: reaching for craving after seeing through it, and flinching from the freedom he asks for.
A man stands at the shore holding a heavy bundle, tired and sore, begging for a boat to cross. When the boat comes he tightens his grip on the bundle and steps back. The bundle is the craving and the sense of being someone who owns things. The boat is the freedom he asked for.
1. Once today, when a craving pulls at you (a snack, a screen, a bit of gossip), stop for one minute before acting. Name it silently: craving. 2. Notice whether you already knew it would not satisfy you. Just notice. 3. This evening, sit for five minutes and ask yourself what you would be if you stopped wanting everything you want. Notice if any part of you tightens or backs away. 4. Write that reaction down in one line. Do not argue with it.
A man of sixty-eight sits in a hospital corridor after a heart scare. His doctor has been plain with him. Ten minutes later he is thinking about the cigarette he will smoke on the way home. Ordinary experience confirms that tired, frightened people reach hardest for old comforts. The verse would change this moment in small steps. First, he sees the reaching as reaching, and not as a decision he has already made. Second, he admits that he knows what the craving costs, which is exactly the first wonder the text describes. Third, he notices that the wish to be free of the habit carries its own dread: who is he without it? The text treats that dread as part of the path, not a reason for shame. The verse does not promise the craving will fade, and it does not replace the doctor's advice or the help a person may need to quit. It only describes the divided mind accurately, and an accurate description is a place to start.
