The steady one, fed or tormented, sees only the Self and is neither pleased nor angry. He watches his own body going about its business as though it were another person's body. When he is praised, or when he is blamed, how could so great-minded a person be shaken?
Three words carry it. Dhira means steady, from a root for holding firm; it names someone whose mind does not slosh about. Kevalam means only, or alone: this person sees the Self and nothing else mixed in. Mahashaya means great-minded, literally one with a wide resting place, so there is room inside for whatever arrives. Now the clauses. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the steady one may be fed well or hurt, and the result is the same: no delight, no anger. The reason is that he looks at the Self alone, and the Self is not touched by either. Then the second thought: the body moves, eats, works and suffers, and he sees it as he would see a stranger's body. It is not his own self. Last comes a question rather than a claim. Praise and blame are only words aimed at that body and its name. If the Self is not the body, what is left for them to strike? The teaching sits here because Janaka has just spoken his wonder at waking. Ashtavakra describes what such waking looks like in plain daily matters, comfort and insult, so the claim can be tested against ordinary life. What it asks of the listener is to look at what in them receives the praise or the blow.
Watch a film in which an actor sits down to a feast, then is slapped by a rival. You follow every beat and feel no sting on your own cheek, because you know the person on the screen is not you. The body moving through comfort and pain is the actor; the Self is the one in the seat.
1. Today, the next time you are praised or criticised, note one thing silently: who is it addressed to, the body and its name? 2. Before a meal, or when a small ache comes, say inwardly for a few breaths, "the body is eating," or "the body hurts." 3. Tonight, spend two minutes recalling the day's sharpest word. Ask what in you received it, and what looked on.
A retired teacher stands at his farewell gathering, garlanded, while speaker after speaker lists his virtues. Near the back, a former student mutters a sneer that carries across the room. Warmth floods his face, then heat. Both come as surely as weather. The verse asks him to notice who is feeling these. The flush, the quickened pulse and the clenched jaw belong to the body, and he can watch them move through it as he would watch them in a stranger. The one watching is the Self, which the text says neither garland nor sneer reaches. With that distance, the garland stops inflating him, and the sneer stops sending him into a night of rehearsed replies. He can thank the speakers and answer the student kindly, or not at all. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a person who has had little sleep or a missed meal is thrown about far more easily by a remark. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the sneer will not be heard or that the body will not react. It does not cure a real illness or replace a doctor, and it is not an instruction to ignore a justified complaint.
