Fearless Before Death

Ashtavakra Gita 3.11

Meaning · English

Seeing this whole world as only an appearance, with eagerness gone from him, even when death stands close, how could the one of steady mind be afraid?

Three words carry it. Maya-matra: maya is appearance, what shows up without being the final ground; matra is 'only'. Kautuka is eager fascination, the itch to be thrilled, to grab, to be held by the show. Dhira is steady, the mind that does not rock. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the one who sees the world as only appearance has lost that fascination. The world is not called nothing. It is seen and used, but it is not taken for what he is. Then comes the test, death standing close, and a question with no answer except 'he could not'. Fear needs something held as mine and about to be lost. For this man, in Ashtavakra's teaching, the self is the witness, never born and never ended, and death touches only what appears. The question is asked here because Janaka has just spoken his wonder at waking. Ashtavakra shows what the waking does at the hardest place, where every other comfort fails. Nothing is asked of the listener except to see how fear is built.

A man in a cinema watches a ship break apart in a storm. The waves are huge, yet he stays in his seat, because he knows it is a screen. When the film ends, the seat is still under him. Death, in Ashtavakra's teaching, is the storm; the witness is the one in the seat.

1. Once today, when a worry takes hold, stop and name what it is about: a person, a sum of money, a result. 2. Ask who is aware of the worry. Rest in that awareness for one minute, without arguing with the worry. 3. Tonight, notice one thing that pulled you in today, such as a screen or a piece of news. Look back at it for ten seconds and see what its pull was made of.

A woman sits in a pre-surgery waiting room, gown on, phone face down, listening for her name. Her mind runs ahead to the worst outcome and treats it as already here. The verse would change this in small steps. First she notices that the fear is a picture her mind is holding, not the room she is in. Then she notices that something in her is watching the picture, and that watcher is not shaking. Last, the pull to keep checking, bargaining and rehearsing loosens a little, because the fascination with the danger has lost some grip. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: fear is sharpest when we grip hardest. The verse does not promise that the surgery goes well, that grief will not come, or that the body feels no dread. It is no substitute for her surgeon, whose care she still needs and should trust. It speaks only of where the one who is afraid is standing.
