Ashtavakra Gita 3.12

Meaning · English

The mind of the great-souled one reaches for nothing, even where nothing is hoped for. He is satisfied in knowing the Self. With whom could he be compared?

Three words carry it. Nihspriha means without longing; spriha is the reach of the hand toward something. Nairashya means hopelessness, the state where asha, hope, has run out. Atmajnana-tripta means filled by knowledge of the Self; tripta is the fullness of someone who has eaten and wants no more. Ashtavakra says the mind of a mahatman, a great-souled one, does not reach out. Even when there is no hope left, no prospect and no outcome to wait for, nothing in him is straining. The second line asks who could be compared to such a man. Ordinary contentment depends on something: a result, a person, a good day. His depends on nothing that can be taken away, because it comes from knowing the Self. That is why no one stands level with him. The teaching sits here because Janaka has just spoken his wonder at waking. Ashtavakra answers the unspoken question of what such a waking looks like when things go badly. The Ashtavakra Gita teaches that it looks like fullness, not like grim endurance. The sage is not holding down his wants. They have no place to start from.

A man has just finished a large meal and walks past a bakery with the smell of fresh bread pouring out. Nothing in him turns toward it. He is not resisting. He is full. The sage's mind is like that man, full of the Self, so the world's offers find nothing hungry in him.

1. Today, pick one ordinary wait: a kettle, a queue, a message you expect. 2. For those few minutes, notice the small reaching in the mind toward the result. 3. Name it quietly: "reaching." Do not fight it. 4. Then notice what is still here under it: your breath, your seat, the one who is noticing. Stay with that until the wait ends.

A woman refreshes her inbox on the evening a job decision was due. Nothing comes. Her chest is tight, her thumb keeps reaching for the phone, and every minute feels like a verdict. The text speaks to this moment. First she sees that the tightness is the reaching itself, separate from the news, which has not changed. Then she sees that the one who watches the reaching is not itself reaching. She puts the phone face down and notices the room, her breath, the tea going cold. The wanting may still rise, but it is seen instead of obeyed. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind braced for an outcome suffers more than the outcome alone would cause. The text claims far more than this: that the sage is wholly satisfied in knowing the Self, with no equal. It does not promise that she will stop wanting the job, or that disappointment will not hurt. It does not replace help from a doctor or a counsellor if the waiting becomes unbearable.
