Meaning · English
Chin set on the chest, the left heel pressed into the hollow of the perineum, the right leg stretched out and held with both hands. Fill the belly with breath, bind it, and let it go slowly. This, it is said, is mahamudra, the destroyer of men's wrongdoing.
Start with the name. Maha means great. Mudra means a seal or gesture, something that closes a circuit. So mahamudra is the great seal: a posture that shuts the body's energy in, as the tradition tells it. Now the instructions, one at a time. The chin rests on the chest. The left heel presses into the hollow at the perineum, the soft place between the genitals and the anus. The right leg is stretched out, and both hands take hold of that foot. The belly is filled with breath, and the text says both sides of the belly. The breath is then bound, which means held. Last, the breath is released slowly. The text gives a reason. It calls the practice a destroyer of sin, or wrongdoing, and says it is taught for men, meaning people in general. That is the tradition's claim, not something the body can show. The verse gives no count, no length of hold and no instruction about the other side. Later hatha manuals add those details, and they are learnt from a teacher. What it asks of a practitioner is a quiet, steady sit with a held breath. A long hold can strain the head, the eyes and the heart, so the old instruction is not to be followed literally without a guide. Stop if there is pain.
A woman in her sixties sits on the floor after a physiotherapy visit, one leg out in front, reaching for her foot. Her hamstring pulls and her breath catches. That is the part of mahamudra anyone can recognise. A seated forward fold with one leg extended stretches the back of the thigh and the lower back. Slow breathing while doing it is widely taught as a way to settle the body. A held breath is a different matter. Holding after a full inhale raises pressure in the chest and can make some people dizzy. People with high blood pressure, eye or heart conditions, or who are pregnant should ask a clinician first. The claim that the posture destroys sin has no modern counterpart. Medicine does not recognise it, and it is best read as the tradition's own language about purification. The perineal heel pressure and the idea of sealing energy belong to the old yogic account of prana. Modern physiology has no matching structure for them.
