Seated, Mind Made One

Bhagavad Gita 6.12

Meaning · English

Seated there on the seat, having made the mind one-pointed, with the workings of thought, senses and action held in check, he should strive in yog for the purification of the mind.

Three words carry the verse. Ekagra is eka, one, and agra, a point or tip: a mind gathered to a single point instead of running in ten directions. Yata means held in, reined, and it is applied to the chitta, the thinking mind, and to the activities of the senses, the kriya. Yog comes from a root meaning to join or yoke, so it is a joining of the scattered mind to one thing. Krishna tells Arjuna what the seat of the previous verse is for. Once the person is seated, the mind is first gathered to one point. Thoughts, the pull of the senses and the small restless movements are held steady. Then comes the practice itself, yog, and its stated aim: vishuddhi, purification of the mind. The reason is in that last phrase. Krishna does not offer stillness as a pleasant state. He offers it as a cleansing, because a mind pulled constantly outward is clouded by what it keeps grabbing. The listener is asked to treat sitting as work with a purpose: gather, hold steady, and keep returning. Shankara reads the purified mind as ready for knowledge of the self. Ramanuja reads it as a mind fit to see the self as distinct from the body and matter. Madhva reads it as a mind cleared to know the Supreme.

A glass of river water carried home, still muddy. Set on a table and left alone, the silt sinks and the water clears from the top. Nobody stirs it clean. The mind works the same way: gathered and held steady in one place, it settles, and the cloudiness it carried begins to fall away.

1. Pick one spot at home and one time today, such as just after waking or before supper. Sit there for five minutes with a phone out of reach. 2. Choose one plain object to rest your attention on: your breath at the nostrils, or a candle flame. 3. When the mind wanders, notice where it went, then bring it back. Count the returns if you like. 4. Afterward, note in one line how the mind felt compared with when you sat down. Repeat tomorrow at the same place.

A woman stands on a railway platform after a bitter phone call with her sister. Her thumb hovers over the screen, a reply half-typed, and her mind is already rehearsing the next argument. The verse would change this in small steps. She sits on the platform bench, which is her seat for now. She puts the phone face down and lets her eyes rest on one thing, the yellow line at the platform edge. Each time her mind runs to the call, she notices it and returns to the line. After a few minutes the reply she wanted to send looks different, because the body has slowed and the mind is no longer being pulled from several directions at once. Ordinary experience confirms that a hurried, tired mind is the one that says the sharp thing. The limit is plain. Krishna's verse does not mend the quarrel, remove her hurt, or replace talking to someone, or seeing a doctor if her distress is heavy and will not lift. It offers a settled mind from which to meet all of that.
