Straight Body, Fixed Gaze

Meaning · English

Holding body, head and neck straight and unmoving, steady and still, gazing at the tip of one's own nose, and not looking off in any direction.

Krishna now describes the body of the one who sits to meditate. Three words carry it. Sama means level or even: body, head and neck form one straight line. Achala means unmoving, with no fidgeting or swaying. Sthira means steady, a stillness that is settled and not merely held for a moment. Then the eyes. They rest on nasikagra, the tip of the nose, and do not look at the directions around, which means they do not chase sounds, movements or faces. The reason sits in the verses on either side. Krishna wants the mind made one-pointed, and a body that slumps, shifts and glances about keeps pulling the mind outward. A straight, quiet body and a gaze that stays in one place give the mind nothing to follow. He asks Arjuna to arrange the outside so the inside can settle. Shankara reads the gazing as an as-if gazing: the eyes are lowered and drawn inward toward the nose, and the point is that the sight stops wandering, not that the eyes are strained crossed. Nothing in the verse asks for force. It asks for evenness and steadiness, with the eyes at rest.

A plumb line hangs from a nail. Touch it and it swings, and the weight wanders until it is left alone. Then it hangs straight and stops. The body is the line and the gaze is the weight. Hold both without poking at them and the restless mind settles along the same vertical.

1. Once today, for five minutes, sit on a chair or the floor with your back upright but not stiff, head level, hands resting. 2. Lower your eyes toward the floor a short distance ahead, or half-close them, and leave them on one spot. 3. Each time you shift or your eyes jump to a sound, notice it and return to the same posture. 4. Afterward, note whether the restlessness in your thoughts matched the restlessness in your body.

A young man waits outside the room where his job interview will be held. He is slumped, one knee jiggling, his eyes darting to each person who walks past and to his phone and back. His thoughts race the same way. Krishna's description would change this in small steps. He sits up so the head rests level over the spine and puts both feet flat. He stops the knee. He lowers his eyes to one spot on the floor and leaves them there. Breathing slows a little, and the next thought no longer arrives with the next glance. Ordinary experience bears this out: a body that fidgets and eyes that dart usually go with a mind that does the same, and quieting one often quiets the other. The limit is plain. Sitting straight with a steady gaze does not make the interview go well, and it does not remove fear that has real cause. It gives him a calmer place to stand while he waits. Anyone with pain, dizziness or breathing trouble should adjust the posture to suit the body.
