Fearless Calm and Devotion

Bhagavad Gita 6.14

Meaning · English

With a serene mind, free of fear, steady in the vow of celibacy, having controlled the mind, the practitioner should sit engaged in yog, meditating on me and holding me as the supreme goal.

Krishna names the inner state first. Prashanta means serene, like water after the wind has dropped. Vigata-bhih means fear gone. These come before any technique, because a frightened or restless mind cannot hold still, whatever the posture. Next comes brahmachari-vrata, a vow of brahmacharya. The word carries the sense of walking in Brahman, with energy held in and not scattered. In the text, this is the sitter's vow of restraint. Shankara reads it as the student's disciplined life, including continence. Then the mind is controlled, and Krishna says where to turn it. Mat-chitta means mind on me. Mat-para means me as the highest aim. The first is where attention rests during practice. The second is what the whole effort is for. Yukta means joined or engaged, so the sitter is bound to Krishna and not merely holding still. Ramanuja stresses that the object of this meditation is the personal Lord, Krishna himself. Madhva likewise takes Krishna as the supreme being to whom the mind is directed. The reason is simple. A controlled mind with no object can still drift or turn to itself. Krishna gives it something to rest on. He asks the listener to bring calm, courage, restraint and a single aim together.

A compass needle shakes while the hand holding it trembles, and points nowhere until the hand steadies. Once the hand is still, the needle swings to one direction and stays. The calm and fearlessness are the steady hand. The mind settling on Krishna as its goal is the needle finding north.

1. Pick one quiet spot and sit there for five minutes today, at the same hour tomorrow. 2. Before you begin, name the one worry you are carrying and tell yourself it can wait five minutes. 3. Choose a single focus: a name of God, a picture, or a line you love. Rest your attention on it. 4. Each time the mind wanders, notice where it went, then bring it back without scolding yourself.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning, waiting for his father's scan results. His heart is quick, and his thoughts jump from the worst outcome to a quarrel years ago. The verse would begin with the fear itself. Krishna puts a mind free of fear and serene ahead of everything else. So the man first lets his breath slow and his shoulders drop. Then he gives the mind one thing to rest on, a prayer or a name he trusts, and returns to it each time the thoughts pull away. Ordinary experience confirms the order: a frightened, exhausted mind will not settle until the body does. Krishna's further teaching is that the settled mind should have a goal, so the calm is not empty. The verse does not promise a good result from the scan. It does not remove grief, and it is no substitute for the doctors, who are the ones to speak about his father's health. What it offers is a steadier person in that chair.
